SPORT BILLBOARD I received a post card on Tuesday, Feb. 80, from a Naugatuck High student questioning my write-up of the Naugy-Wllby game and Charlie Bertero's coaching ability. I could not decipher his name and therefore I will try to answer him here Instead of a personal reply; The card read! wondering why you did not report Naugy coach was called for technicals twice and It Naugy the game, we lost enough games with a poor coach without giving games away.

1 N.H. Student For those who were not at the game, I will explain what happened. Butch Vlegas was at the foul line shooting one- and-one after being fouled by Art Williams. He connected on both. It appeared to Coach Bertero that Williams smacked Roy Stiff on the back of the head In going for the possible rebound, and he protested vigorously to the referee.

Bertero was promptly called for his first technical at 5:36 In the second period. Rich Lebel took the shot for Wllby and missed. Wilby passed the ball in bounds and four seconds later Bertero, sitting on the bench, questioned what he thought was an apparent traveling violation and was nailed for his second technical. Lebel took the shot and made it. Now to answer John's card.

First, Naugy did not lose the game because of the techni- cals, on the first technical Lebel missed the shot-and Wilby did not score on the Inbounds and scored one point 16 seconds later. However, It wouldn't be fair to blame the technical for the point as it resulted from afoul. Wllby, therefore, only scored By BUI Baker one point as a result of the two technicals. The final score was Wllby 58, Naugy 56, wil- 'by winning by two. The two technicals hurt, as any foul hurts, but they certainly aren't the difference 'In the game.

Also, a coach doesn't giveaway anything when he argues for and defends his players. Second, Coach Bertero is not entirely to blame for NaugyV poor season. Many factors are Involved. The team is a young one, the starting five consisting of four juniors and one freshman. Only one player played regularly last year.

There was only one senior on the team, who saw only limited action. Injuries also a factor. I am- not trying to alibi tor Bertero. He must take some of the blame, but It would be unfair to condemn him on the basis of this, his first season. wait and see what happens next year.

Things might be different. Third, I did report the two technicals in the write-up, two times. John, if you wish to question a write-up of a game, please read the article first. I will be happy to accept and answer any questions or comments you may have about this column or a write- up of a game. They all will be read and If they warrant it, will be Included in this column.

Naugatuck High School hosted the Bloomfleld-New Canaan game in the CIAC Class A play- downs. Even though NewCanaan won by 19 points, 72 to 53, the game was well played and a pleasure to watch. Most noticeable In the game was the fine Job turned in by the two referees, Ed Mariano and Russ Hanson. They kept the game clean- and made all good, fair calls. Good officiating is typical of most post-season contests.

However, It seems that much is to be desired in regular season activity. Basketball is progressing rapidly and each year the players Improve, making for a better game. However, the same cannot be said for the officials. High school basketball is one of the largest drawing spectator sports in the state. Both the fans and the players de- 'serve better officials during the regular season, not only In the tournament.

Wilby, ranked number one In the CIAC Class A ratings, will- be playing Ell Whitney Tuesday night at the NHS gym. Wllby finished the regular season with 17 wins and two losses. Ell Whitney qualified with 13 wins and six losses, but is a strong team, and Wilby will have its hands full. In Class it looks like either Falrfleld Prep or East Catholic, with the pick here go- Ing to East catholic. Wilby is strong, but not strong enough.

They will be lucky if they can get by Eli Whitney. Smeglleski, former starter for Naugatuck High School, has helped to lead Post Junior College to a successful season in the Connecticut Small College conference. Post vent undefeated In the conference, winning 12. Overall, Post's record is 16 wins and 10 losses and 15 and 0 among state competition.
