and June J. nine on Leroy: lov- JOURNAL. Tuesday, June 15, 1976 Airlines' profit needs argued at transport meet VANCOUVER (CP) Airlines must be allowed to make reasonable profits if they are to get out of the current capital squeeze and provide needed service, a Canadian Transportation Research Forum meeting was told Mondav. Afraid You're Going Deaf? Montreal An offer of special interest to those who hear but do not understand words has been announced by Beltone. A non-operating model of the smallest Beltone air of its kind; will be given to anyone answering this adver.

tisement. Send for this non-operating model now. It is not a real hearing aid, but it will show you how tiny hearing help can be. The actual aid weighs less than a third of an ounce, and it's all at ear level, in one unit. These models are offered at no charge, so we suggest you write for yours now.

Again, we repeat, there is POD cost, and certainly no obligation. Thousands have already been mailed, so write today to Dept. 2209, Beltone Electronics of Canada P.O. Box 647, Montreal, P.Q. Cy O'Brien, vice, president of CP Air, said only with such profits could the airlines win back the investing public.

"We have to get across to the public and to governments that profits is not a dirty word" but are essential to continue operations, said Mr. O'Brien. Rhys Eyton, president of Pacific Western Airlines, said traditional sources of capital are no longer availabie to airlines. Dismal earning records of airlines recently have off investors and undercut retained earnings, historically two main sources of funds, said Mr. Eyton.

In addition, the latest federal budget will further affect funds available for expansion and replacement by pruning allowable deferred taxes and reducing to' 25 per cent from 40 per cent allowable interest write from leasing. L. G. Potvin, corporate. planning director of Transport Canada, said air traffic will continue to grow in the next two decades but at a slower pace.

David Kirkwood, senior assistant deputy minister of the transport department, said that during that time the roles of various transportation methods will shift, with freight of all kinds growing and airlines ance passenger service, offering no frills long- distRail, road, and marine freight service will continue to move to more ordination and interaction, said Mr. Kirkwood. J. H. Spicer, corporate vice president of Canadian National Railways, said Canada's rail systems also are feeling the urgency of acquiring capital for future expansion.

Mr. Spicer said that due to the recession and lower income growth of the company's customers. the CNR has stalled plans for full double tracking which would greatly increase capacity. He said no major changes in capital investment are expected during the next 20 years. there is some major decline in our traffic volume, we would be spending approximately $250 million a year merely for renewal of equipment, roadway, yards and other facilities," said Mr.

Spicer. P. J. Detmold, special assistant to the president of CP Rail. said that company could easily increase capacity if it was allowed sufficient profits.

He said CP Rail's rate of return has been just under five per cent during the last three years. VIENNA (AP) In Vienna, the great number and variety of traffic signs leave motorists in a state of confusion. In fact, officials admit they don't even know how many signs are around. Mayor Leopold Gratz has called on motorists and traffic experts to check the situation and submit recommendations for changes. He's suggested that a reduction in the number of traffic signs might even increase road safety.

City officials know there are 3.000 1 lights to regulate traffic for the city's 415.000 privately registered vehicles and the city's streetcars. But they threw up their hands when asked how many traffic signs there were in Vienna. Gratz said the many traffic signs make it difficult for motorists to grasp their meaning quickly. They were thus increasing road hazards instead of helping to limit them. The mayor called on commissions to look into the short-time parking zones, non-stop areas, loading zones and generally into traffic signs and traffic lights, to see whether they fill a real need.
