"We don't know a tiling about them," said basketball coach Dick Niclai.

"As a matter of fact I'm not sure where the school is located." Niclai reports the Lumberjacks "are showing steady improvement. Their play has improved noticeably in the last couple of weeks. We are ready to play a ball-game." He lists size "as our problem. Our weak point is the boards. "This will be a first-game situation for us," Niclai continued, "and we expect a lot of mistakes.

We will try to operate at a little faster pace than we have in quite awhile. I believe we have enough firepower to blow most teams out." Center Bill Welsh (6-5) is the lone senior on the starling five and he will be pushed for his job when. University of Oregon- transfer Paul Benson (6-7) becomes eligible in January. Niclai listed the other starters against the Western Baptists as junior Mike Waterman (5-10) and Laney College transfer Bruce Fernandez (6-0) at guards and DeAnza tranter Rick Cook' (6-4) and freshman Bruce Malulich (6-5), at forwards. Malulich hails from Branham High of San Jose: Niclai has his charges practicing on the floor of the new gymnasium.

However, since there are no bleachers in the new facility the Lumberjacks will continue to play their games in the men's gym. Bleacher costs omitted "As near as we can determine the bid for the new gym didn't include bleachers," explained athletic director Ced Kinzer. "The latest figures for them is $48,000 and we just don't have the money for them." The 'Jacks are working out in the new gym. nasium because classes are being held in the old one. Too, the women's volleyball teams praclice there as there are no facilities lo anchor the net standards in the new one.

Niclai was quoted as saying "It seems pretly ridiculous lo me that a school of our supposed stature doesn't have a home court. You practice for a whole week in some place, then go in on a Friday night and play your game in a totally different structure." As one ex-varsity performer noted: "It's pretty obvious. The two gyms are a lot different. The lighting, flooring, sound, even the rims are different. You have lo be familiar with your surroundings." However, Kinzer doesn't believe the problem is that big.

"Nick's teams play only nine home games this season and they will have the men's gymnasium for workouls from time to lime as they do now. Things can be worked out. But we sure miss those new bleachers," he added wistfully. and McKinleyville linebacke Korbe Brenner. repeaters.
