Roller-coaster goes at full tilt Thrill-seekers have been lining up all weekend to lay down $3 a crack for a stomach-churning ride on West Edmonton Mall's new triple-loop roller-coaster. The $6-million bright-red steel structure, winding like a snake through a new pavilion beside Fantasyland, has been running at full tilt since it opened Friday, said Bill Canner, Fantasy-land's general manager.

The coaster is about 40.4 metres high and passengers on its four 16-seat trains feel a force five times greater that gravity as they zoom through the structure at 95 kmh, said Deane Eldredge, director of Triple Five public relations. A ride lasts 1 minute 40 seconds. Theresa Griffin and Karen Durstling, two Grade 9 students, think it's so great they had taken the ride 1 1 times by 6:30 p.m. Sunday and were seen back in the lineup for their 12th ride. "It's so fun," said Griffin.

35-year-old man slumped behind the wheel of his car. They were unable to rouse him and called for an ambulance and police help. But before paramedics could begin reviving him, he woke. Noticing the attendants, he drove off across the street into the Centennial Mall parking lot at 170th Street and Stony Plain Road. Paramedics tailed him but had to break off their pursuit when they had to respond to another call, police said.

By this time, however, a police squad car rolled into the parking lot and began following him. A driver finally jumped from his vehicle in the parking lot and fled on foot. After a short chase through back yards in the area, a man was arrested. A man has been charged with impaired driving and having an alcohol level over .08 mg per 100 ml of blood. He was also charged with driving without a licence.

The Yirgaw family is grateful for the clothing and assistance the congregation has lavished on them. Gartshore said churchgoers, meanwhile, have been blessed with new understanding of another culture. "One woman made the comment that, know we're supposed to be concerned about other people in the world, but now that we see them I'm even more interested in the said Gartshore.

"I think we realize how much we can be truly thankful for. We don't have civil war, we're not starving to death and we have a government that, by and large, treats us well." The customs of exchanging presents and decorating the Christmas tree are nothing new to the family, and Yirgaw said his sons learned all about jolly old "Papa Natale" (Santa Claus) when in Rome. "What I found interesting was their custom of throwing green grass into the air whenever they celebrate," said Gartshore. "There was no green grass last night at our open house, of course, so Abby (Yir-gaw's wife) threw popcorn PICTURE: Bruce Edwards for about a year before starting his own firm, Hank Koenen's Airways, in Yellowknife. Tadesse Yirgaw, wife Abre-heto Woldearo and their two young sons knew nothing but civil war, strife and famine until they fled their Eritrean home. After a two-year wait in Rome, their appeals to the Canadian Embassy were answered this spring when United Churches in Whitehorse and St. Albert sponsored the immigrant family.

"Canada is a blessed country." said a beaming Yirgaw, 36. "There is no more peaceful country. It's the fairest in the world. "I don't like war and that is why I chose this country." They arrived in St. Albert in late July and have stayed in the home of diaconal minister Ian Gartshore.

Saturday, they'll move to an apartment of their own in Edmonton. The family's stay in Italy acquainted them with many western customs, but nothing could prepare them for November's frigid temperatures and snow. "I speak the truth, the weather is hard. But we are starting to get used to it," Yirgaw said, cuddling four-year-old Musie. He and his wife studied Eng.
