A14 THE EDMONTON JOURNALv Tuesday, March 29, 1983 Alberta Dogs that killed toddler checked out in lab tests Environmentalist upset with 'disgusting' water star Westlock RCMP say laboratory tests are being performed on two dogs who attacked a three-year-old Barrhead boy last week. Nolton Nanninga died March 22 in University Hospital after he was attacked by the dogs on a country road near his home. The toddler wandered out of the farmyard about 3 p.m. and was dragged six metres into a field and mauled, said Const. Murray Ash.

His grandmother found him after nearly an hour, but the boy later died of hypothermia and loss of blood. The dogs responsible, a mongrel and a collie, were destroyed that evening and stomach content samples sent to the Edmonton RCMP crime lab. Brain samples are being analysed in a Lethbridge lab for rabies. The technology exists to purify drinking water to the level where it is suitable for drinking, said Appleby. Meanwhile, Martha Kostuch, a member of the ECA's public advisory committee, announced that an ECA Lodgepole blowout study group has been awarded $12,500 from the Department of the Environment.

The group is asking for $142,000. The study will start immediately to gather snow samples in the Lodgepole area to determine the environmental impact of last fall's blowout, she said. Snow samples will be studied to determine the areas with the most hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hydrogen oxide (S02) deposits, she said. These areas will then be studied in greater detail later to determine the impact of the deadly chemicals on the local vegetation and wildlife, said Kostuch. Alberta's overall level of water quality is "disgusting," says an Environment Council of Alberta (ECA) committee member.

Don Appleby said Monday the province should consider the expense of having higher quality water purification standards as one of the costs of an industrial civilization. "Industry looks at the cheapest way to produce a product and that's just what they do," he said. Appleby is chairman of the Cold Lake Citizens' Advisory Committee and a member of the ECA's renewable resources study group. He was speaking at a meeting of the ECA's public advisory committee. Documentation already exists showing that portions of the Bow River, South Saskatchewan, North Saskatchewan, Red Deer and Athabasca Rivers are seriously polluted, he said.

"We've had a really good response from our canvassing," said Albert Klapstein, chairman of the steering committee formed in February to get fire protection.

"We hope to get things rolling by the end of April." The group expects to purchase a fire truck from another local volunteer fire as guished the blaze after Leduc RCMP contacted them. "Looking back on it now, we could have lost a lot more if that fire had spread to the house," Dufresne said. Volunteers have been canvassing the area to sign up members for a $100 share in the group, called the Nisku Rural Fire Protection Co-op. Annual dues will be $20.
