Two detectives testified that Steelman allegedly confessed that he worked for a California crime syndicate and was a hired killer in Denver, but fled for his life after failing to kill a target. Steelman, 29, Lodi, is on trial in Apache County Superior Court for the November 1978 shooting deaths of Michael and Patricia Sandberg of Tucson. Trial was moved from Tucson after Public Defender Robert Norgren complained of pretrial publicity. Monday and Tuesday heard portions of transcripts that allegedly were of Steelman's confession. Portions dealing with his alleged past as a narcotics runner in California and "hit man" in Denver were read by detective Sgt.
