E4 EDMONTON JOURNAL, Friday. July 16, 1982 Gaines: building on excellence "It's a lot more difficult now. The skills of the receivers are much better, over-all, and the deployment of receivers in different there are really no weak areas, anymore." Gene Gaines be increasing his staff, and I asked to be considered. After Dan left, I applied for the secondary job." Campbell, who played throughout his career in Saskatchewan as a wide receiver against Gaines, obviously had learned to respect him. It was mutual.

"He wasn't the fastest or flashiest individual," Gaines says of Campbell. "Most defensive backs took one look at him and figured all they had to do was stay sort of close to him but that was to his advantage. He wasn't fast, but he was awfully quick to go to the ball once it was thrown, and he had a way of getting himself between the defender and the ball. "He and Lancaster were like a machine. Hugh would just turn and drop to one knee and, zip, Ronnie would have the ball right there." Gaines says that organizing pass defence has become more complex than during his early playing days.

"It's a lot more difficult now. The skills of the receivers are much better, over-all, and the deployment of receivers in different there are really no weak areas, anymore," he says. By CAM COLE If Larry Highbaugh bristles at the suggestion that he's too old to play football at 32, hell get plenty of support from Gene Gaines. Gaines was still starting in Montreal Alouettes' defensive backfield when he was 38 and at 44, the new man on Edmonton Eskimos' coaching staff looks as though he could play stilL He's now coaching Highbaugh, plus at least a couple of other Eskimos defensive backs he knew while playing andor coaching in Montreal from 1970 until 1981. He says the wealth of experience in Esks' secondary has made it easy to adjust to a new team and new personnel.

"The whole defence has such an experienced group of players, I wouldn't expect to change things," says Gaines, who replaced secondary coach Dan Daniel here, when the latter moved south in the off-season to become Calgary Stampeders' defensive coordinator. "It's been a very successful group and to tamper with that might only limit their success. The only thing you can do is try to build on what's already been established here. "I'm probably learning as much from them as they are from me, and that's what I've been trying to stress; that's we'll learn together." If Esks' defensive backs will look up to anyone, it should be Gaines. The Los Angeles-born, UCLA-trained defender played 16 years in atmosphere here, as a whole, is very warm and collective," he says.

"Hugh (head coach Campbell) has a great understanding of the relationships of human beings, especially as they affect coaching. "Any strangeness I might have felt was just in getting used to Edmonton's defensive terminology." Gaines found himself out of a job after last season, when the entire Montreal coaching staff was dismissed in the wake of the now-defunct Alouettes' miserable season. "I had coached with Cal Murphy some time ago, on the Montreal staff, so after I was terminated from my position there, I started calling around asking about job openings," he recalls. "The only thing I had heard about Edmonton this was before Dan Daniels left was that Hugh might the Canadian Football League, starting with Montreal in 1961. He played from 1962-69 in Ottawa before returning to Montreal for seven more years during the last of which, 1976, he was both a player and defensive coach.

His 42 career interceptions is 10th-best in CFL history, and he still holds the all-time mark for the longest-ever CFL kickoff return, a touchdown against Hamilton in the 1964 Eastern Conference playoffs. "They're always kidding me about that," grins Gaines. "Bruce (Esks offensive coach Lemmerman) keeps asking: "Why'd you even catch the I say that was my job first I catch it, then I decide what to do with it. That time, I guess I decided I better run it out." Gaines says the entire team has made him feel at ease since his arrival, and that he hasn't experienced any of the uncertainty that might be expected of a newcomer on a closely-knit coaching staff. "I haven't felt uncomfortable in the situation, I suppose, because the After a long career (16 years) as a player in the CFL, Gene Gaines brings a wealth of experience with him to his new job as secondary coach.

"We do have a good football team here," he said. "We're not just a bunch of humpty-dumpties. "If we (the coaches) don't screw it up too bad, I think you're going to see a good, five-team race in the West. With a break here and there, and not getting too many players banged up, we'll be there." 301-10909 JASPER AVE. EDMONTON, ALTA.

He's also gone from a team, Edmonton Eskimos, which won four straight Grey Cup championships, to a club which finished dead last in 1981 in the Western Division of the Canadian Football League. "Yes, it's definitely a challenge moving to a new team," Daniel says. "But the ideas and philosophies have been very well received by the players and we're making progress. "They're enthusiastic about the prospects here.

About the only thing they don't like is they tend to get upset with themselves when they can't do things correctly right off the bat. It'll take time, but it will come." Daniel was the defensive backfield coach for the Eskimos for four highly-successful sea sons, yet he couldn't turn down the prospect of being virtually his own boss as defensive co-ordinator of the Stampeders. Jack Gotta, the head coach-general manager of the Stampeders, brought in an entirely new coaching staff this year when he elected to return to the sidelines. Daniel will be the main architect of the defence. "I'm not the type of person who looks back with a lot of regrets," said Daniel.

"If we run a halfback blitz and get burned, I won't say we shouldn't have done that. "I'm very happy here. I enjoyed my four years in Edmonton, but this is another new challenge. Jack Gotta has given me everything he promised and more. The whole enthusiasm of the camp has been good." Daniel said he has several ideas he'd like to try with the Calgary defence this season and he's committed to running the "30" defence featuring three down WW mm The Tory 3 Bedroom Bungalow A DIVISION OF WAYNE'S TIRE WAREHOUSE COMPARE THE HELP PLAN MODEL HOMES OPEN: 5 Greenwood Drive.
