& D1 4 EDMONTON JOURNAL, Tuesday, November 16, 1982 I Troubled kids L on increase By LORRAINE LOCHERTY Journal Staff Writer An increasing number of severely behavior-disordered children are disrupting elementary classrooms, says an Edmonton Catholic School District official. "The ones we're seeing now seem more troublesome than the ones when I was a teacher," assistant superintendant David MacDougall told trustees Monday night. Fewer than one per cent of the district's 28,000 students have severe behavior problems, but they consume a great deal of time, he said. "It seems incredible that a Grade 2 student could create such problems, but it's happening." Five or six years ago most behavior problems were created by Grade 8 students, who now choose to leave the school system, MacDougall said. Suspensions, crisis counselling and attendance problems at the elementary level have increased significantly in the past five years. "There's no doubt that children are reflecting changes in society with regard to respect for authority, obedience for law, and a general loosening of views towards traditional values," MacDougall said in a report to the board. Some parents and teachers lack the expertise to cope with negative behavior, said MacDougall, in charge of counselling services for the district. "It seems to me discipline is one of the gut issues in education," said school superintendent John Brosseau. He said the district will make a full discipline report to the board by Christmas. Injured rescued A young father, seriously injured in a flash fire, re-entered his burning northeast Edmonton home to rescue his infant son Sunday night, fire investigators say. David Mitchell, 26, was listed in stable condition Monday in the burn unit of University Hospital, where he is being treated for second- and third-degree burns. Mitchell and his 21 -year-old wife had fled the house, 11937 57th St., before remembering their 11-month-old son was still asleep inside. Fire investigators said Mitchell was washing auto parts with gasoline in the basement about 7:30 p.m. when fumes were ignited by a water heater. "The man ran screaming upstairs to his wife in the kitchen," said chief fire investigator Joe Spencer. "They both ran outside and the guy rolled in the snow to put himself out. They'd forgotten about the baby." Both the woman and infant were slightly burned as flames raced upstairs from the basement. Fire damage had been estimated at $30,000 to the house and $ 10,000 to contents. Active in church affairs, former 'Y' president dies Funeral services were held Saturday for Agnes McDougall, a former president of the Edmonton YWCA. Mrs. McDougall died Nov. 9 aged 88.
