D8 EDMONTON JOURNAL, Monday, February 16, 1981 111 UMiMiii in mil il iiimn. i i in 'I couldn't take it any more' Capsule reviews By John Dodd fascination human body ot view ot the killer himself is more than I can take, at least when handled with such an utter lack The plot, like most of this genre these days, rips off John Carpenter's Halloween, something about a dreaded killer who escapes from a mental industry, an industry gradually gaining contempt all over the world. 'My Bloody Valentine, which opened as a promotional device just before the day that's supposed to honor the patron saint of lovers, features cannibalism, violent sex, countless murders with a machete and pickax and endless shots of bloody human hearts stuffed into Valentine candy boxes. That's just the first half. I walked out halfway through.

I couldn't take it any more. As far as I can tell from the first half, this is a movie made by the mentally warped for the mentally warped. I don't mind good horror movies. I enjoy a good scream. I loved Psycho and even Halloween.

But the current trend towards sadistic horror and the institution to My Bloody Valentine Capitol Square By JOHN DODD In my time as a movie reviewer; I've sat stolidly through more axe and knife murders than I care to remember. I've seen men lowered screaming in a meatgrinder, pigs eating the entrails of a live girl. Week after week, I've sat through the worst that Hollywood can offer, films that made Son of Sam look like a saint. I felt that to review the picture I should in fairness sit through the whole show, no matter how sordid. Until now.

The worst that Hollywood could offer has been topped by the exploitative, money-mad Canadian film turn Valentine's Day into a blood bath. All of this you thanks ssr mzz ISizZr Canadian Film Development Corp. which uses your own tax money to help greedy, talentless producers make a killing, you should pardon the expression. Happy Valentine's Day. The Jazz Singer (Avenue): Neil Diamond and Laurence Olivier (yes, even him) turn in the two worst performances of the year in a lame remake of the Al Jolson oldie.

Diamond's songs are pleasant, however, and the whole production works desperately to be ingratiating. Seems Like Old Times (Capilano): Mindless though sometimes funny fluff. Neil Simon remains a witty writer and Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase and Charles Grondin are at the top of their form in a 1930-style comedy about a writer turned bank robber who hides under Hawn's bed. Private Benjamin (Capitol Square): Goldie Hawn goes to war, playing a pampered brat persuaded to enlist. She does look marvellous in battle dress but the movie falls apart in the last half, turning from decent barracks humor to the worst kind of predictable romantic comedy.

Fort Apache, The Bronx (Capitol Square): Paul Newman is a veteran cop in a violent neighborhood. This may not be an authentic view of life in the Bronx, yet it's a compelling one. Newman is entirely satisfactory with a role in the John Wayne tradition. Popeye (Capitol Square): The first reel is a work of whimsical genius, Robert Altman at his most innovative. The rest is unexciting as Popeye tries desperately to appeal to everyone newscasts TV Highlights If you're really in love.

Tess (Meadowlark): A brilliant adaption of the Thomas Hardy novel by exiled director Roman Polanski, perhaps one of the best films of the decade. The story of a young farm girl up against the hypocrisy and moral rigidity of 19th-century England is told with elegance and depth. The cinematography is stunning and Nastassia Kinski is ravishing in the title role. The rating is "family" but childen will not enjoy it. The Competition (Odeon 1) The Incredible Shrinking Woman (Odeon 2, Plaza 1): The incredible shrinking script.

The laughs grow smaller despite the wasted talent of Lily Tomlin who plays a woman whose body takes in so many chemical additives, hairsprays, aerosol sprays and preservatives that it soon reduces to the size of a chipmunk. How many shrinking gags can you take in 1V5 hours? Altered States (Paramount): William Hurt takes a potent acid-mushroom mixture and goes into an isolation tank where he begins a physical regression to earlier incarnations. For a director fond of visual tricks and psychological insights, Ken Russell seems remarkably afraid of science in a science-fiction picture. He has all the characters mumble their scientific lines and the action becomes difficult to follow. The special effects are a stunning trip, however.

Stir Crazy (Plaza 2): A dreadful comedy that begins with cruelty and ends as a routine prison picture directed in plodding fashion by Sidney Poitier. Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor play two innocents who are wrongly convicted of a bank robbery. They belong behind bars for shameless mugging. Nine To Five (Rialto 1, Varscona): Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton can be very funny playing secretaries who get back at their chauvinist boss. But the laughs grow thin eventually as the much-promoted picture turns to traditional slick Hollywood comedy, something about the wrong body stolen from a hospital and the boss strung up to an electric garage door opener.

Charlie Chan (Rialto 2) The Stunt Man (Roxy): Richard Rush's offbeat, black comedy about reality and illusion and Hollywood mythologies is original, funny and puzzling. Peter OToole has one of his best roles in years as the autocratic director on a movie set where a fugitive takes cover by posing as a stunt man. Unfortunately, the whole production has an appealing coldness about it that sometimes looks like cleverness for its own sake.
