(DirOuD d)(D)(g TiroDUuIbD aBodl ofc.CTHte By GENE MUSTAIN Of Daffy News Staff Writer Joe Trimble, a son of Brooklyn who realized his dream and became the Daily News' man at Yankee Stadium, died last week of congestive heart failure. The legendary sportswriter, who chronicled the exploits of Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and dozens of other greats and near-greats during a renowned journalism career spent entirely at The News, was 79. "He wanted to be a ballplayer himself," said his wife, Clare. "He was a superb second baseman as a young man, but he always said he could not hit So he did the next best thing: He became a writer." Trimble, who retired in 1980, started at The News in 1936 and never left, except during World War II, when he enlisted in the Navy as a seaman. He was an officer by war's end, coordinating intelligence flights from Iceland.

Like many of his colleagues in the sports department Trimble began as a copy boy assigned to The News' city desk the hub of the newsroom. "The News was our university and the city desk our classroom," said AMONG FRIENDS, Joe Trimble (I.) talking sports in 1967 with the Mets' Tommy Davis Daily News colleague Dick Young and Yanks' legend Mickey Mantle. CARLOTTA MONTI LOS ANGELES Carlotta Monti, 86, an actress whose stormy relationship with W.C. Fields was chronicled in an autobiography and movie, died Wednesday at the Motion Picture and Television Home and Hospital in Woodland Hills after a long illness, it was reported yesterday. Monti, the vivacious actress who appeared in such films as "The Merry Widow," the original "Ben Hur" and "One Night of Love," was Fields' companion from 1933 until his death in 1946.

Their relationship was the subject of the 1976 movie "W.C. Fields and Me," starring Rod Steiger as Fields and Valerie Perrine as Monti. It was based on Monti's book about the couple's tumultuous years together. Monti once told interviewers how Fields had hired a private investigator to follow her because he was jealous, she had disputed his reputation as a heavy drinker. "I never saw him drunk," she said.

It wasn't until Fields died that she achieved fame through her struggle for a part of his $770,000 estate. She spent years fighting Fields' estranged wife and relatives, including some who claimed to be illegitimate children. In the end, Monti was awarded two trust funds that paid her about $50 a week; she said the money ran out in 1954. Her 20-year stint as a technician for Technicolor ended in 1972. In a 1968 interview, Monti said she wasn't bitter.

"Here I am, 22 years later, living in a dive, working in a factory, but for 14 years I was a millionaire," she said. MICHAEL McGRATH A funeral Mass for Michael McGrath, 83, an attorney and former counsel to the New York state Racing Commission, will be offered tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at St Veronica's Catholic Church on Christopher St McGrath, who served as counsel to the commission under former Gov. Averill Harriman, died Thursday at his Manhattan home. He is survived by his wife, Kath-ryn, three sons, three daughters and a sister.

Viewing will be today from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Redden's Funeral Home, 325 W.

14th St well, Trimble became best-known for his coverage of the Yankees, particularly during the team's glory years in the 1950s and 1960s. Inspired by a Yankee publicity man with a tape measure, Trimble wrote an account of Mickey Mantle's 565-foot home run in 1953 "the titanic smash" that alerted the world to the wonder of the young slugger from Oklahoma. Trimble, whose last major story was an obituary of former heavyweight champion Gene Tunney, also is survived by a daughter, Christina. Funeral services were private. News' cartoonist and boxing columnist Bill Gallo.

"And Joe Trimble became known for his reporting, for breaking the inside story. He was always on top of his beat" While he covered other sports as inhsunibSy Mine TaolBy Diss HI) By DAVE SALTONSTALL "If my name was going to be on it I wanted it to be good. I mean, I never had a great career, but what I had was very honorable arid I didn't want to go down in history as just a bad theater." Tully was 20 when she sailed off to Paris to study under Jean Perier, the renowned tenor. She made her debut at the Salle Gaveau in Paris in 1927 and in New York City in 1933 at the old Hippodrome Theater. She never married and leaves no immediate family.

Funeral services will be private, but at Tully's request she will be fittingly remembered one last time with a memorial concert at Alice Tully Hall. The date has yet to be announced. mentioned," said Brooke Astor of Tully, her long-time chum, in an August 1992 interview. A second cousin to actress Katharine Hepburn and a former soprano herself, Tully donated most of the $4.5 million needed to build the Lincoln Center chamber music hall, which opened in 1969 on Tully's 67th birthday. The auditorium has long been considered one of the finest venues in the country by both artists and audiences.

It is said that the hall's spacious seating was laid out only after Tully had brought in her 6-foot-6 cousin to test the leg-room. As she told the Daily News in 1977: Party News Staff Writer Nelson Rockefeller once jokingly introduced her as Alice Tully Hall, and indeed it was not uncommon for strangers to unwittingly greet her as "Miss Hall." But if Alice Tully's name became synonymous with the Lincoln Center theater that bore her name, she also embodied all that is good about philanthropy and the arts in New York City. Tully died Friday at the age of 91 in her apartment overlooking Central Park. "She always was such a good board member, doing what she promised, not running about to get her name DEATH NOTICES QUINLAN-Jeremioh A. Long time CLASEM Sr.
