C6 EDMONTON JOURNAL. nuird.iv. November I She crossed country Junior 6 HenrySinger 4 Journal by using peddle power By Lesk'Y Francis "They dress differently in different parts of the country and their accents aren't the same, but generally they're a damn good crew. They made me feel good about being a Canadian and that's something I hadn't expected." People along the way helped feed her. There was the old lady in Alberta who gave her a lunch beside the road in a paper bag: the Holiday Inn manager in Kenora, who let her stay free for the night, and the Quebec City nuns who gave her a huge lunch in a green garbage bag that lasted a week.

Why did she bother making such a trip? She just wanted to see Canada and it seemed like a good idea at the time, says Miss White who is back tending bar at a Toronto pub. She is easy to spot. She's the one smiling and, if you ask right, she's the one who will admit her thighs are almost 9 cm larger than they were a year ago. a single woman on a lonely road at night and confronted by four bikers is frightening, but, when she explained her mission, they left her alone. Then there was the time near Wawa, Ont.

when a van load of young men flagged her down, told her they were priests and offered to let her spend the night with them. An improbable story, right? They were priests, however, Jesuits and they were on their way back to Concordia University in Montreal. When she finally reached Montreal after driving through steady rain for several days, she took the priests up on their offer of a warm, dry place to stay. But then, she had little choice but to stay she was suffering from viral pneumonia and spent four days with the priests until she recovered. "All across Canada people are the same," she says.

"Their politics might be different, but their hearts are the same. She made the trip in 90 days from Vancouver lo St. John's. and along the way she made a lot of friends, so many in fact that when she arrived in Newfoundland there were 65 congratulatory telegrams waiting for her.

"I wore out a pair of shoes in the first week pushing the bike up the mountains in B.C.." Miss White, 25, says as she recalls some of the rigors of the trip. At the slow speed a bicycle usually travels you'd expect that the driver would have plenty of time to consider the next intersection and know which way to turn. But not Elisa. "My friends all call me Wrong-Way. I must have ridden an extra 150 miles because of all the wrong turns I took." With the laugh comes a grab-bag of memories of the trip some of them touching, others funny and a few of them frightening.

Take, for example, the time four motorcycle gang members stopped her. Being It was certainly an unusual letter! And it involves a complicated string of associations. Here goes anyway. Sarah Stone of Edmonton recently wrote to ask me if I knew anyone by the name of Mary Alice. It seems her mother has a friend by that name.

This friend has a friend named Lesley. About a year ago Sarah's sister Evelyn babysat for this Lesley and it seems she looked a lot like me. So Sarah wanted to know if I had a friend named Mary Alice and whether her sister had babysat for inc. The answer to this riddle is yes! MORE QUEER In the mail the same week came a similar letter from Astrid Blodsert. 14.

of St. Albert. She wanted to know if I was leaving The Journal. It seems a friend of mine is a friend of her dad's. This friend had said I had to move because of my husband's job.

We did have plans to move but that's changed. THINGS TO Hurry! There's not much time left to pre-register "for the Provincial Museum's four-week Saturday program on pioneer crafts.
