OiMDSl mmtm i (g CSDDM lfg)U By DAVE SALTONSTALL nounced they would not be offering the pay-per-view gala. Stern immediately got on the air and urged his followers to call the cable station and complain. By the end of the day, the station had relented. "That was one of our great triumphs," said Duva, who added the cable operators had objected to the show based on its racy content The station's management disagrees. It said last week that their sole concern had always been the relatively high price of the Stern event "People who have a forum tend to engage in a lot of rhetoric," said Tom Soulsby, general manager of Sam-mons Cable Service.

As of late Thursday the station had sold about 600 New Year's Eve subscriptions, Soulsby said. "It was just much ado about nothing." Whatever it was, there seems to be no end in sight to Stern's success, despite a shtick perceived by many as racist, sexist and totally devoid of taste. Three studios have reportedly offered film deals to Stern, and several television companies, most notably the Fox Television Network, are apparently trying to lure him into late-night television. "He may be the world's greatest living salesman," Duva said. "No, wait Did I say may be? He IS the greatest living salesman." said Kathy Duva, marketing director for Main Events.

Stern, never one to hold back, began talking up the proposed event on his radio show in August, weeks before any deal had been officially signed. After reaching a formal agreement in September, the New Year's extravaganza became a daily topic on his show, heard by an estimated 3 million listeners in 16 major cities every weekday. To further hype the event, regional contests were held in cities across the country for women interested in competing in the New Year's "pageant" Contestants included lactating women, leather-clad women and many who came directly to Stern's studio to disrobe before him on air. Not surprisingly, orders for the show were particularly strong in the cities where Stern's morning blabfest can be heard. Naturally, the pitches came laced with crudeness, rudeness and the occasional falsehood.

Said Prez would attend "The President will be with us New Year's Eve," lied Stern during his Dec. 23 show. "And Hillary's going to get a swift kick if she objects." Along the way, Stern got a chance to flex his growing economic might when a cable system in Fort Worth, Tex. one of Stern's larger markets an things, lesbians, flatulence, sex and Stern's own genitalia. But despite Stern's bold emergence this year from the confines of radio, the former ad salesman and Boston University graduate insists he's still just an ugly kid from Roosevelt, L.I.,, with a twisted sense of humor.

"According to Variety (the entertainment newspaper), I'm almost Howard Hughes," said Stern during a pre-Christmas press conference. "And I hate to mislead them, but I'm still a working stiff." Indeed, no one can argue that Stern doesn't work hard. He and his moronic band of sidekicks fill the airwaves five days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. His cable TV interview show on Entertainment Network was broadcast once a week until last November.

And unlike a lot of celebrities, Stern actually wrote his own biography. Then came New Year's Eve. It was last May when the people at Main Events Television, the Totowa, N.J.-based promotion company, first thought seriously about giving Stern his own New Year's Eve pay-per-view event Someone to go 'nuts' The idea was simple: Find an entertainer that could deliver as many viewers as a world heavyweight boxing match always the biggest draw on pay-per-view and let him go nuts. Pay-per-view, after all, is not bound by the nudity or profanity regulations that govern TV and radio. "We sat down and everyone collectively asked, 'What entertainer could deliver boxing-like And there really was only one answer," Dauy News Start writer He's the Mouth that Roared.

Some would say, the foul mouth. He's the disc jockey that raised shock radio to an art form and parlayed his gift for gab into a best-selling book, a cable TV program, a top-ranked radio show and now, potentially, the most-watched pay-per-view event in entertainment history. Only Howard Stern can claim to have dominated so many mediums at once. And yesterday the once geeky kid from Long Island earned more money in one night than most people will ever see in a lifetime. How much, you ask? Well, no one's saying for sure.

But if estimates hold true for Stern's "Miss New Year's Eve Pageant," as many as 500,000 cable viewers will have shelled out $40 to see the show. That means Stern could today be looking at a payday worth somewhere between $3 million and $5 million, after promoters and cable operators take their cut Not bad for two hours work. Apparently more and more people these days would rather watch a loudmouthed deejay prance around on stage with John Wayne Bobbitt than watch the ball drop in Times Square.
