Page 6 --Saturday, August 12, 1972 THE TIMES-STANDARD Morning Line Biggest At Fair: Gimnar By NORM UNIS News Editor FERNDALE--Gunnar Froincs, a field of thoroughbreds or appaloosas and a starting gate add up to the biggest show the- 1972 Humboldl County Fair has to offer. Froines, 56, is track announcer at the fair's pari-mutuel racing meet. The meet concludes today, but not before Froines, master at starting the equines and bringing 'em home in thrilling stretch duels, shares the spotlight with the hundreds of horses North Coast bettors consider investments, either sound or otherwise. The greying racecaller, currently a resident of Albany near Golden Gate Fields, also is The Times- Standard handicapper and "I pick 'em like I see "em," he says. He does.

Like the 10-card program which spun around the half-mile oval Thursday when 2,435 bettors attended. Froines, after a so-so start in the day's program, plucked four straight winners from his hat--Mus- tedie (6th race), Vitamin (7th), Kentfield (8th) and Kidaway Dali (9th)--and had it not been for a long- shot, Helectro in the 10th, Froines might have picked another winner. At times you wonder if most of the bettors' eyes are on Froines or the track. He's a mixture of a stock investment consultant and a Bert Parks calling the fillies the way he sees them at the annual Miss America contest in Atlantic City. Eureka, California Had Equated Ferndale Record Injury Proves Fatal to Noo Quest FERNDALE Noo Quest, he four-year-old bay gelding hat equaled popular Grandpa Sam's record over six and one half furlongs here last Saturday, lulled up in Friday's featured 10th race with a log injury and was destroyed.

The Humnoldl County Fair lorse racing slate winds up with today's 12-race program. Post time for the first race is 1:15 p.m. Noo Quest, owned by J. E. Colyer and trained by John Colyer was put to sleep Friday evening.

Rusty Gun, with James Trujillo up, finished first in the 10th race with a clocking over and one-half furlongs. Noo Quest equaled the 1:30 flat clocking shared Sam (1I1GO) and by Grandpa Cosmo Lea (1901) last Saturday by beating out Rusty Gun by a nose. Ferndale Results Opening second to Indian Vce Rusty Gun took control of the Equipment Co. purse on iti backstretch and Trujillo urgei the 10-year-old to a four-length; victory as Indian Vee faded am Billy Buster, with Arthur Ochoa riding, would up second. Ruslj paid $180, $3.20 and $2.80 3illy Buster returned S4.GO am S3.40 and Rescue Squad paid 15.00 for show.

Clarence Courtwright, already had a five-point leac over Arthus Ochoa in the jockey standings, guided four winners home Friday and added a second to bolster his bid for top rider honors for the meet. Courtwright was aboard Roman De in the seventh race and brought the betting favorite across the wire in 1:00.4, the fastest five furlongs of Ihc meet. SPORTS Don Terbush, Editor He also guided Sir Bruno to a ength win over rtiss Fuel in the third race; rought long-shot Lady jeanie $15.20) in First in the fifth race, nd won on High Fog in the inth race. Courtwright's second came aboard Naughty Pierre in the second race. Little Mister, will Al Costa up, was the high-payei for the day at $16.40, beating ou Naughty Pierre by a head in the stretch drive.

Joe Valenzuela and Join Lindquist were the only other double-winning jockeys. The Scrambler, with Valenzuela riding, nosed out Slip Over ir the final and most exciting race of the day, a five-furlong event for thoroughbreds. Valenzuela also won on Dusty Dock, a 5-1 betting choice that returned $12.00 in the eighth race. Lindquist won on Keep Back In fourth race and Sandy Way in the sixth event. ft wasn't much of a day for the Exacta players.

Little Mister and Naughty Pierre returned $29.40 in the $2 second- race Exacta. Sandy Way and Sister Clove paid $22.00 in the $5 sixth-race Exacta and the $5 Exacta finale of The Scrambler and Slip Over in the llth race was good for $25.50. The day's wagering was $83,533, up more than $13,000 for the same day last year. The figure represents a 21 per cent increase. Track attendance was 2,148.

i showing boosted his point-standing 23 marks to 98. Number two man Arthur Ochoa picked up 10 points via three seconds and a third. He is 18 points back of Courtwright. Jockeys receive five points for each in, three for each second-place finish and one 'or each third. Gary McSwan, Jorge Cruz and Valenzuela are all in the 57-63-point range.

Today's feature, the mile and iye furlongs llth race is the Belotti i Purse, the Hum- joldt County Marathon. The $2 Exacta will be on the second race and the two $5 Exactas will be on the sixth dnd the 12th race. Gunnar Froines calls 'cm For a fellow who admi-ls to never being on a horse, Froines, nevertheless, lias made horses his life. "I first started working the races at Plcasonton in Alamcda County in 1946," says Froines. In 1947, Golden Gale Fields opened and Froines was right there, working at numerous jobs.

UP AND DOWN the a i circuits, Krnincs eventually found himself as very capable backup track announcer and inherited the job here in 1955 after Tod Creed, now describing the races in the Bay Area, departed. "I've been handling things here since that time," reminds Froines, who let it be known that he is a very proud A i a from Norway. The personable racetrack enthusiast relies on his "memory course" to follow the horses around the track and into the winner's circle. You'll barely hear him chattering in whispers before every race, hooking the names of the horses entered with the colors of each jockeys' silks. Soon Froines has an eight-horse Hold memorized and seldom does he mislead Ihc i an error in placement i the race.

"Every race is a memory course," explains Froines, "and you have to go by Ihc colors concentrate on the whole i and forget the race entirely after it is over." Froines is a and a i a bcllor. "But not a big one," lie confides. However, if you listen closely as Ihe horses whip into the stretch for the i a lime, l-'rnines' i raspy but i i voice i bwonu; as one of his wagers grows steadily accurate. "Naturally I get a lil.lle excited!" he says, "but I'm alwasy a to a i myself and call them straight." He calls straight at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate, too, where he serves under Creed. He's also proud of (he fact a described them at Hollywood Park in the a of this Golden Stale.

THE RACETRACK in this quaint town has been in operation 77 years. Kroincs hasn'l seen all the horses run, but he's seen a hero tu Santa A i a His favorite thoroughbred? Swaps, i of (he 1955 Kentucky Derby. "There's never been a i like him." con- lends Froincs. He went so far as lo discount top money winners like Round Table, Kelso and a host of others. "He (Swaps) did everything al ask of him," lie i Thai, statement very easily Froincs.

He also handles the racing programs here the help of my grandson, i Robertson," he declares. And oilier duties, loo. The pressbox is a busy one when l''roines, a widower, is at the mike. The Kerndale-favorite will he heading soulh a today's final race lo join his daughler nnd her family, including iwo other a i He has been relatively alone since his i Gaylcnc, died less Hum year ago. "They loved her here," Froines reflects.

"She was always with me." His close friends obviously have great respect for him, just as thousands of Coast bellors have, bettors who rely on his and descriptive racccalling. "May I have your attention, please. The horses are entering the starling gale." That would be Froincs today in the last race of the fair's meet.
