expected return for the Speed To Spare Championship Aug. 2. Bagfull closed a lot of ground last Sunday after being far out of it. From the rail out in the Spangled Jimmy will be Ky Alta, with Rick Hedge in the saddle; Foncier; Third Of July, a recent purchase from New York for Max Luider's stable; Spartairus; Kinetic Power and Chief Hilarious. PADDOCK PATTER Don Seymour fashioned yet another hat trick last night with his wins, including Norman Prince for Joan Prunkl which ran wire-to-wire in the featured ninth for $20,000 claimers.

Another of his wins was with Black Spirit in the eighth for the new partnership of Maureen Nicholson and Jean Burnett, who have Floyd Arthur as their trainer. Autum Spirit ran away with the race for owner Ron Payne. Autum Spirit paid $6.40 with Ron Hansen in the saddle and sped the three and one-half furlongs in 39.3. Meanwhile, the 1980 Alberta Horse of the Year, Ky Alta, has returned from the coast to compete in Saturday's Spangled Jimmy Stakes. Where the recent Westerner Handicap for the top older horses didn't fill, the Spangled Jimmy drew a field of six from 11 original nominations.

He will be opposed by 1979 Alberta Horse of the Year, Fonder, who is en route from Seattle. Both Foncier and stablemate Bagfull ran last Sunday in losing efforts in a stake at Seattle, but Bagfull will be given another race at Longacres Sunday before his Meldrum muttered after Onwitch failed to beat a horse in her competitive debut in the fourth race for allowance two-year-olds at Northlands Thursday night. The original Onwitch won the first seven races of his career while trained by the late Spud Murphy of Brother Leo fame for owner Doc Meyers of Rosetown. He was hurt in his three-year-old campaign, and raced only one more year. In any event, the present Onwitch went to the starting gate in style.

All the stable help in trainer Red Smith's barn wore T-shirts with Onwitch emblazoned across the chest. And a welcoming chorus serenaded the Nicholl box in the upper deck of the grandstand. But their songs of joy soon turned to a dirge when the Red Bott-trained By DON FLEMING Talk about putting the cart before the horse! Jack Meldrum, a member of the Northlands race promotion committee, says that his buddy Jack Nicholl is so desperate for a good horse in his stable that he gave a recent purchase from a Kentucky sale the name of Onwitch, a name which originally belonged to a star of more than three decades ago on the prairie circuit. Not only that, but the latter-day Onwitch raced in Nicholl's purple and gold silks which were modelled after those of his grandfather Jim Charlesworth, who had such stakes champions as Spangled Jimmy, Virginia Fair and Spangle Sheila. "Nicholl forgets that the horse comes first, and the name next," 4 SEATEARS-Canhandiethese.
