Ed Wise, business representative of the union, said that in Eureka, a a throughout the state, this is quite a step in equal rights for women in the painter's union. However, Mrs. Roath says her new painting career comes as a result of a discussion with her husband, Carl, a member of the Eureka Fire Department.

She told him a woman could earn man's He displayed doubts, so she set out to prove it to him. "Besides," she says "I've always enjoyed Her biggest jobs in the past have been at home and in an tirjuing furniture. "For awhile, when I talket about painting, I think Car thought I was talking abou painting pictures," she said "He hasn't said what he thinks this kind of painting -he's too stunned." Wise says he met Mrs. Roatl a short time ago and she talked about painting and how she would like to work in that field Wise told her he'd see what could ibe done. Joe Wright, pain ting contractor on the new Orlandi Apartments on Street in Arcata, needed another man, so Mrs.

Roath was placed on the job. THE TIMES-STANDARD Saturday, July 29, 1 RUTH SIMMONS ROATH is the first woman apprentice in Painter's Local 1034 of Eureka. She says she wants, to prove a woman can earn a man's wages. With her are, left, Hero Smith, painting foreman for Joe Wright, painting contractor on Orlandi apartments in Arcata, and Ed Wise, business representative of the painter's local. Now, Mrs.

Roath is serving a three-year apprenticeship, just as any other beginner. After a series of six-month increments she will graduate as a full-fledg ed journeyman. She is confident she will make it. In her first days on the job Mrs. Roath found the men "nice to work with," but the treatment for all is equal with no special breaks because she is a woman.

She wants it that way. Herb Smith, painting foreman for Wright, says, "Some women better workers than men and, I guess this is the coming thing women in the crafts. She takes some kidding, but she good natured." Mrs. Roath smiled through a surface of paint speckles. Paint was scattered all through her abundant hair.

"I take a 'good, hot shower when I get home and it all disappears," she says. Mrs. Roath is a native of She attended local schools and, graduated from Eureka High School in 1968. The Roaths have two children, one two-and-a-half years old and the other 11 months. While she is away on the job they are cared for by her mother.

On her days off, what will she be doing? Mrs. Roath's answer: "Painting at home, of course." Even when it doesn't count towards her apprenticeship.
