Varsity and Freshman Crews Victors Over Oarsmen of California. By Associated Press to THE PUN. ALAMEDA, April 15. The eiehth annual intercollegiate boat race today between the varsity crews of the University of California and Stanford was won by Stanford mby one length. Time, 14 minutes 5 seconds.

The race was over a three-mile course. The Stanford crew also won the annual freshman boat race from the State university oarsmen by two lengths. Time, 16 minutes. The freshman crew from Stanford had a 'comparative walk-over, but the varsity eights provided the greatest struggle ever seen on the water between the two universities, the California crew making a desperate spurt at the finish, which nearly won them the race. Rowing the ugly, but tremendously effective stroke which has been a tradition at Stanford since the pioneer coaching days of Dan Murphy, the brawny Cardinal eight gained a half length at the start, an advantage which they did not lose during the entire three-mile grind.
