Eureka, California THE TIMES-STANDARD Sunday, July 9, 1972 5 Guerrilla Leader Assassinated BEIRUT (UPI)-An assassin's bomb Saturday took the lite of Gassan Kanafani, a leader of the Arab guerrilla group that claimed "complete responsibility" for the May massacre a I Israel's Lod International Airport. An estimated 11 pounds of explosives literally blew Kana- fani to pieces. His 14-year-old niece who was with him also was killed. The blast was so powerful it split and partially Kanafani's handgun, scattered bits of metal and flesh over a wide area and left a foot-deep hole in a concrete parking lot. Kanafani was the official spokesman and a' high-ranking leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which took "complete responsibility" for the attack at Lod Airport that killed 27 civilians.

Shortly after the front announced that the three Japanese men who indiscrimin' ately sprayed Lod Airport with bullets and handgrenades were working under PFLP orders, the group's leaders disappeared from their usual Beirut haunts, apparently in fear of Israeli retaliation. A statement by the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) of which the front is a member, said: "The martyr-fighter and hero Gassan Kanafani. one of the leaders of the PFLP and an Turk Government Vetoes U.S. Bishop as Patriarch (UPD-The Turkish government Saturday vetoed the candidacy of an American archbishop as a possible successor to Patriarch Athenagoaras the spiritual leader of 157 million Eastern Orthodox faithful. Athenagoras, elected in 1948, was born in Greece and became an American citizen after his election in 1930 as archbishop for North and South America. The Turkish government conferred citizenship on Athenago- ras after his election in 1948 and his flight to Istanbul aboard President Harry Truman's personal plane.

While Orthodox leaders tried Another Chess Delay REYKJAVIK, Iceland (UPI) --The Boris Spassky-Bobby iFischer world chess championship match, already delayed for nine days, ran into new problems Saturday when the chief arbiter left Iceland. U.S. chess sources said Fischer, the 29-year-old American challenger, is "al peak form and raring to go" into the first game Tuesday against the world a i Russia's Spassky. But the sources said there might have to be another postponement--until Thursday-since chief arbiter Lothar Schmid will not be back in town until then.

Schmid, a West German grandmaster and the owner of a book publishing firm in Bamberg, flew home Saturday morning and said he would return Thursday. He said he was leaving because one of his sons had been injured in a traffic accident. Schmid's assistant arbiter. Gudmundur Arnlaugsson of Iceland, will be in charge final preparations, which include the touchy job of picking the chess sets and board to be used. Schmid said lie had invited the two players to come to the hall together on Sunday to check on the facilities and hopefully approve them.

But this meeting was called off Saturday after Schmid left. Spassky also left town and went north with Icelandic friend and chess player, Freys- teinn Thorbcrgsson. on a salmon fishing trip. Russian officials said Spassky would be back Monday, at the Thorbergsson also invited Fischer along, but the American turned down the invitation to observe his Church of God's Sabbath from Friday night until Saturday night. By tradition the west door of the Patriarchate in the Fener quarter of Istanbul remained closed, as it has done since 1821 after the death of each patriarch. Ottoman- lurks hanged Patriarch Gregory on Easter morning that year and the closed door was made a symbol of 'protest when the church is without a leader. lakovos was born Demetrios A. Ncoucouzis in Imvros, Turkey, in 1911 but has lived mostly in the United States since 1945.

Church sources in Istanbul said lakovos had been one of the strong favorites lo become Patriarch. Athenagoras, 85, died Friday, a week after he fell and broke a leg while climbing a flight of stairs at a monastery. Church sources said another highly regarded candidate for election as the 2C9th patriarch was Archbishop Meliton of Chalcedon, 59, currently acting as caretaker of Athenagoras' throne. They were 'not near the explosion, which took place in the ground floor parking lot directly under Kanafani's apart- ment in the Hazmieh suberb of Beirut.

The girl who died, Lamice Fayez, was the daughter of Kanafani's sister and had been visiting the Kanafani's with her mother at the time.
