Eureka, California THE TIMES-STANDARD Friday, January 19, 1973 --Page 11 Watergate Trial Is Stalled WASHINGTON (UPI) The Watergate political espionage trial remained stalled today while the U.S. Court of Appeals considered whether conversations secretly monitored from the wiretapped telephones or high Democratic officials could be admitted as evidence. Judge John J. Sirica, faced with the start of the presiden- tial inauguration holiday, indicated he might delay further action In the U.S. District Court trial until next week to give the appeals court time to act on the side issue.

The judge old newsmen Thursday that he "wasn't 100 per cent satisfied" with the progress of the two-week-old trial which has resulted in MMIONW WSAIHtl SUVICl I. 7AM HT guilty pleas by five of the seven nen indicted for the break-in at )emocratic national hcadquar- crs at the Watergate complex icre last June 17. Remaining on trial are .0. Jordon Liddy, a former White louse aide and one-tiine inaocial counsel to President Nixon's re-election campaign committee, and James W. McCord former chief of ecurity for the committee, 'hey are charged with con- burglary and illegal wiretapping and eavesdropping.

Part of Sirica's dissalisfac- iun stems from the fact that it considered unusual for a trial be halted, while lawyers haggle over less important ssues in a higher court. The impasse occurred when he prosecution's star witness, ortnor FBI agent Alfred C. Baldwin HI, testified Wednesday how he was hired by VIcCord for $225 a week to 3avcsdrop on both personal and jolitical conversations of from a listening post--a rate! room across 'the street 'rom the Watergate. im WEAIHCt 010CAI North Coast Forecast ilghs I the 2 WEATHER: Eureka and vicinity, variable cloudiness with a chance of showers In the area this morning, clearing this afternoon, fair tonight and Saturday, but with increasing clouds late Saturday; no major change in temperature; hi days 48-56; lows tonight in winds mostly northwest up to 30 mph, decreasing tonight; probability of measurable rain 20 per cent today; 10 per cent tonight and 20 per cent late Saturday.
