The Board of Trustees met last even ing in the City Hall. Present, Trustees Leeher, Lightfoot and Mee Clerk Harris, Engineer Finkle, Stieet Superin tendent Bright, Attorney Brown by William Gird. In the absence of President Newburg, Trustee Lesher was elected chairman pro tern. The minutes of last meeting were read and approved. This being the evening for opening of bids for city printing, the following bids were opened Flagg Walker, job work for ensuing year, 158 Abbott Ducoe.

The following resolutions were adopted unanimously Whereas, This city was visited by 'a dangereus fire on Friday, August 15th, which came very near destroying a large portion of the business center of the city, and. Whereas, Only for the prompt and effective work of the excellent fire department was the fire confined to the block in which it originated; therefore be it Resolved, That this Board hereby extends to the fire department of. the city San Bernardino its sincere thanks for striving so nobly and successfully to save the property of the city, endangering their lives to prevent the' spread of the flames; and be it farther Rtiolred, That this Board reposes the utmost confidence in the fire department, as it has proved in a highly satisfactory manner its efficiency when needed, and 'developed a training and proficiency nnexpect ed and deserves the thanks of the entire city, which will always feel that its property is safe while protected by such a fire department; and be it further Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the chief of the fire department, to the city papers for publication and to be engrossed in full upon the minutes of this Board. A communication regarding the differ ent kinds of macadam was received from 'Mr. Knight of South Riverside, setting forth the advantages of his porphyry, rock over all other kinds of macadam. On motion the communication was submitted to the superintendent of water works. Chairman Lesher reported on behalf of the committee appointed for the location of the pavilion in the park, that they had decided to locate the pavilion in the center of the south side of the park, the front facing the center of the park and the rear resting on the alley. Chairman Lesher stated that there had been some complaint in regard to the bridge on Fourth street, and he believed that the matter had better be referred to the engineer and Street Superintendent to report next meeting.

Engineer Finkle reported on bids for the iron columns for the reservoir, that he had the following bid from Baker Iron Works: 18 columns, eight feet long, six inches in diameter and three-quarter inch metal for $315; Fosmer Iron Works, same for $250; Ur ion Iron Works, same for $150. Engineer Finkle reported as follows on the progress of the water works: Since the last meeting they bad laid 2,000 additional feet of the conduit, completing itj from I street to Mt. Vernon avenue. About 20 feet had been paved on the east side of the north chamber of the reservoir. The mains had been laid on and portions of street The engineer was instructed to furnish plans for the roof of the reservoir.

There being no further business the Board aajeurned until next Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Dr. Bedford's dental office will be closed until Monday, August 25th. 8-19t5 SHORT LOCALS. C.

F. Roe, Insurance Agent. The El Dorado is the cheapest dry goods house in Southern California. Work was commenced at the park yesterday in clearing up for the foundation for the pavilion. There will be a special communication of Phcenix -Lodge, No.

178, F. and A. M.f to-night for work in the second degree. Professor Lockard presented this office yesterday with a box of delicious peaches, grown on his ranch orth of the city. Four drunks were arrested yesterday by Officer Moesser.

They will probably be put to work in the park to-day by Street Superintendent Bright. Let all members of Arrowhead Parlor be in attendance at the meetinc thin evening, as considerable business is to be transacted in regard to the celebra tion at San Francisco. On the fourth page is the decision of the Interstate Commerce Commission in the cae of the Board of Trade of San Bernardino vs. Santa Fe Company et which will prove highly interesting reading to our citizens. Yesterday the case of J.

M. Forquar vs. C. O. Barker et al.

was commenced in the Superior Court and will come up Friday before Judge Campbell. It is a case concerning the right to certain water in the vicinity of Banning, appropriated by the Banning Land and Water Company, and which is 'now ctaimed by Forquar, who was ejected last week by men of the Banning Company. Lassie Longmir, a popular and well-known young lady of Highland, died at her home at that place yesterday morning, at 6 o'clock, from typhoid fever with which she was stricken about one month ago. She was a native of this valley and had many warm friends who will be deeply pained to learn of her death. The funeral will take place this morning at 9 o'clock, from the Highland Church.

A farewell party was tendered Miss Ida Bennett at the residence of Mrs. Benry Goodcell, on Monday night. Miss Bennett leaves to-morrow morning for San Francisco and other places in the Prt of th State, where he will visit friends until September 16th when she leaves for Siam, where she goes on issionary work. The Younsr People's Society of Christian Endeavor of which she was a member, presented eatifal fcrop and the pupils of Riley school gaye her a handsome ring as remembrances of the esteem in which she is held. "The Prince and the Pauper." "The Prince and the Pauper" will be seen at the Opera House Tuesday, August 26th.

This play, new to our theater-goer, made a great success in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco, where it had extended engagements. This engagement is under the direction of Daniel Frobman and Al Mayman, hich is a guarantee of ex cellence.

The committee on the ninth of Sep tember celebration of the Native Sons of this city are pleased to announce to their friends that the rates given to the Native Ssns are also open to the public, as shown by the following: San Frasciso, August 19, 1890. Lightfoot Rate by steamer SI 8 round trip; open to public. II II. Chamberlain. Mr. Chamberlain is chairman of the Joint Committee of Arrangements, and has been working on the railroad and steamship company for several days, with the above result on the steamship company.

The Santa 'Rosa will sail on September 3d from San Pedro, the Pomona on September 1st, and the City of Mexico on September 5th. People attending the celebration should go on September 3d at the latest, as the grand display of fireworks takes place on the night of September 6th. The subscription committee have collected about $300 and will probably need about $150 more. It is quite likely that Riverside band will accompany the parlor, as they think the city of Riverside will raise money enough to send them. Mr.

Henry Jackson, the Calico representative, states that the Native Sons of the Golden West have carried the desert by a large majority and he will bring a fine exhibit from over the mountain, be-sided considerable money. All those who wish to go must make their intention known before August 25th, so arrangements can le made for their accommodations on the steamer. Cut out the slip in the Courier and send it in at once. PERSONALS. George B.

Stebbins, the electrician of Los Augeles, is in the city. F. II. Melendez, a prominent railroad of Los Angeles, is in the city. Miss I sol a Smith came up from Santa Monica yesterday on a short visit.

II. Davenport, agent of the Union Pacific road at Loa Angeles, was here yesterday. Fernando Tavares left yesterday for Boston, which place he will make his future home. Mr. B.

Howard and wife left yesterday for GrinnelT, Iowa, on a three month's visif with relatives and friends. F. F. Oster and Ed Muleahy returned from a trip to Calico and other points on Monday night's delayed overland. Williamson Dunn, general agent of the Santa Fe at Los Angeles, accompanied by his wife, was in the city yesterday.

Joseph P. Steiner, of the firm of Lemcke, Steiner A Co. of San Francisco, is in the city looking up the fruit business. Dr. Fleming has gone to San Francisco where he will spend bis vacation, expecting to remain there for the next month.
