Firmin, Herbert Bank Release. from Cottonport 2400 More Hospital Beds Slated for State Construction of 2400 more hospital beds in Louisiana for people who can afford to pay for hospitalization has been recommended in a newly revised survey of the state's hospital needs. Brought up to date for the first time since 1946 by the staff of the State Hospital board, the survey is being studied by the board's advisory council. Construction of the additional facilities, the survey shows, will assure people living in all communities of the state of adequate hospital services within reasonable distance from their homes. The Federal government will bear one-third of the cost of this new construction or improvement, with the remainder coming from local or state sources. The plan outlined by the survey provides for the division of Louisiana into eight hospital regions, which are in turn divided into 57 smaller hospital service areas a plan which will put most of the' state's population within 15 miles or less from hospital facilities. Considered in the planning program are each region's population, the number of acceptable beds at present and the number under construction. A priority system has been established, on the basis of relative need, and available funds are distributed on this system. Heading the list of priority areas in the field of general hospital beds are Farmerville and Oak Grove in North Louisiana, St. Francisville, Amite and Covington in the Florida parishes, Thibodaux and Plaquemine in South Louisiana, and Eunice in the southwestern section, of the state. Applications from these towns, if they fulfill Federal requirements, will be given first consideration in the distribution of funds. Other towns which rank high on the list for early improvement of hospital facilities include Vivian, Abbeville and Houma, which have better services now available than the first nine com munities, the survey shows. The greatest need for improvement was found in the thickly populated Sealed bids will be received by the Avoyelles Parish Police Jury, Marks ville, Louisiana, until xu:uu a. ju., September 21, 1949, and then publicly opened and read in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, involving the approximate quantities: Channel Excavation, approximately 510,100 cubic yards. Clearing and Grubbing, approximately 3.44 acres. The right to reject any and all bids is reserved. Further information as to specifications, proposal forms, etc., may be had upon application to the Department of Public Works of Louisiana, Eleventh Floor, Capitol Building, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
