Loewer's record is now 4-2, and the Jays will have no sweat making the playoffs. By BEN REED Managing Editor Big Stan Loewer says he doesn't really get started until he starts to sweat.

However Merryville never got started here Monday afternoon and before it was all over, the Panthers were no sweat for Loewer. Not only did the 6-foot-4 fireballer equal a St. Ed's pitching record with 18 strikeouts, but for the first time in his illustrious pitching career, the big guy hurled a perfect game. "By the fourth inning I knew I had something going. I really don't get started until I start to sweat," the highly touted hurler reiterated, adding "My fastball was the pitch that did it." Indeed his 90 mph fastball was his most effective weapon as Panther batters often began swing- sit vtnr ly.

77' -lJ KT: vv-Tr-: I -t. v'S A-JtSi But the story of the game was Loewer's command of the Panthers. Twice last season Loewer pitched no-hitters and struck 17 batters, however walks spoiled his perfect game efforts. But there must have been a little nervousness on the part of the blue chip per in the top of the seventh inning. Not because he was three outs from the perfect level, but becuase he had just about lost his entire defense.

Shortly before the final inning started, the entire junior class had to leave to prepare for Catholic Confirmation services being held that night. This resulted in Coach Harold Fuselier emptying the bench of its reserves. However Stanford was the only one with an opportunity to handle the ball and he made a dramatic catch of a routine fly ball. Loewer quickly fanned the next two batters. Loewer's record performance must have been de-ja vu to Merryville.

His 18 "Ks" tied a mark set by 1982 ace Scotty Richard who also struck out 18 batters enroute to a perfect also against the Panthers at North Park. 8 Loewer The picture of perfection ing simultaneously with the thud of the ball hitting the catcher's mitt. Not a single Merryville runner reached first base in this 8-0 St. Ed's victory. This also clinched for them a share of the Dist.

3-A crown even though it was the two teams' loop opener. They are the lone participants in 3-A. Only one Panther batter, Floyd Stark, was able to hit a fair ball. However shortstop Brent Andrus robbed Stark of a hit in the fourth inning with a sensational stop up the middle, helping to save Loewer's perfection. "I surely did thank him (Andrus) for that one and told him not to let down," Loewer said with a smile.

Reserve outfielder Kelly Stanford caught the only other fair ball in the game as the St. Ed's defense stood idly by. First baseman Kurt Sit-tig also caught a fouled pop up for the other out. Loewer struckout everybody else and once had a string of 11 whifs. And the count never went full.

Hapless Merryville which committed eight errors falls to 1-9 overall for the year and 0-1 in the loop. They host St. Ed's next Tuesday. Should the Jays win again, it will give them their sixth straight district championship. St.

Ed's hitting also clicked against a trio of Panther hurlers. David Nezat led the attack with two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored while David Fontenot went three for three with two runs scored. Mitch Fontenot, Thad Richard, and Loewer himself each had one hit. The game was never in doubt as the Jays scored a first inning run then added four in the third. Two more in the sixth game them the final 8-0 margin.
