Born in Charlottctown, P.EI., Mr. Davison left his Former president asks troops to leave Lebanon into action, pitting itself against German troops in the Ypres Salient On April 6, 1916, 15 German soldiers surprised the small group of Canadians which included Mr. Davison.

He was taken to a camp which accommodated prisoners, including French, Polish, British, Dutch and Russian troops. While working as a laborer on a farm Mr. Davison learned enough German to get along well with his cup-tors. Later he was diagnosed as having diptheria and sent to a military hospital, a move which probably saved his life as the PoW camp was soon ravaged by an epidemic of Spanish Flu. Mr.

Davison was released shortly after the Armistice was signed on Nov. 1 1, 1918. On his return to Edmonton he rejoined Edmonton Telephones and remained with the utility until his retirement in 1963. During his carter he worked his way from a switchman to the company's chief switchman, with responsibility for all exchanges in the city. The funeral will be held Saturday at 1 :30 p.m.

In a later statement, the right-wing former president criticized President Bias Sarkis for not explaining why he wanted to resign last week. "Some people have ac-' cused you of conniving with, the Syrians, of having prepared the recent events, while others consider your resignation a protest against the arbitrary' actions of the Syrians," Chamoun said.

"If this last hypothesis is true, you should ask the Syrians to leave and not leave yourself." BEIRUT (UPI) Former president Camille Chamoun Wednesday demanded that Syria withdraw its troops from embattled Beirut in 24 hours and from all of Lebanon within a month. In an open letter to the daily newspaper Al Amal. the 78-year-old Christian leader made his demand as an undeclared cease-fire between Christian militiamen and Syrian troops generally held for the seventh straight day, despite sporadic small arms fire. Chamoun said he was asking the withdrawal so the Lebanese can "feel safe" imm. lViiiia WkiUiijj A -Jk XT'? McMahon G.L. McMahon dies; rites set George L. McMahon, 74, a leader in the Canadian oil industry, died in Calgary Tuesday af ter a long illness. Active in the Alberta oil industry since 1 930, he founded Pacific Petroleum Ltd. and West Coast Transmission Co.

Ltd. with his older brother Frank. They also pioneered the landmark development of the Turner Valley fields, southwest of Calgary, in the late 1930s, and created Pacific Petroleum in 1939 after several drilling successes. They later guided construction of a $200-million natural gas pipeline from northwestern Alberta to Vancouver and the northwestern United States. George McMahon, born in Moyie, near Cranbrook, B.C., moved to Vancouver and established a successful brokerage firm.

Much of the money to finance oil well drilling came from his Vancouver business. The McMahon brothers drilled one of the first oil wells in Leduc Atlantic No. 3 which later became Alberta's most famous well when it blew out in 1948. George McMahon was an avid football fan and "a great quarterback at a tiniversity in Spokane, Washington, in the late 'ZOs," said a close friend of many years. Donald McLaws of McLaws and Co.

In the 1950s, Mr. McMahon thought the old Calgary football stadium, with a small seating capacity, was preventing the city from forming its own professional team, said Mr. McLaws. In I960, the McMahons put $300,000 into the building of a football stadium, later named for them. Mr.

McMahon spent eight years as president of the Stam-peders Football Club, and he was nicknamed "Mr. George" and "Mr, Football." llis great-nephew, Frank, 28. remembers his uncle as "being aggressive." His philosophy was self-reliance, pers-everence and tolerance. "He was a very close family man. He was always happiest when his family was around," said Mr.

McLaws. Mr. McMahon's titles at various times included honorary colonel of the King's Own Regiment, associate director of the Calgary Community Chest, and president of Calgary Inn. Illness in 1967 forced him to leave Calgary for the more favorable climate of Nassau, although he returned to Calgary in summers. Mr.

McMahon is survived by his second wife, Kathleen; children Katherine, Patrick, William and John of Calgary, and Pauline Carnsew and Susan. Clarke of Vancouver; and seven grandchildren. A funeral service conducted by Archdeacon Cecil Swan-son is set fqr 10:30 a.m. Fridav at St. Stephen's Angican Church.
