PyjE EIGHT. SAN BERNARDINO DAILY SUN -TUESDAY, MAY 4, 1909. HighSchooh Happenings CHAPEL EXERCISES. John Brown, Jr, ffiive the students an extremely interestlnc and pleasing talk on the pioneers of the valley and on the piountalna. He had with him on the platform Mr.

Ptoddard. Mr. Hoi-comb and Professor Stevens. ree old pioneers, who vent with him to the mountains for a fishing trip as soon as be finished his talk. He ppoke chiefly on the surrourMliiig mountains, making his theme more interesting by representing that he was the leader on a trip through the mountains, that he pretended the pupils were making.

He told first of Cajon pass, which he said was Spanish for Box Pass," so named because of its peculiar formation. He next spoke of "Saw Pit canyon." which he described as an ideal place to spend a vacation. He showed that "Tub's Peak" had been so named as an ox by that name had wandered oft to this place and lived there awhile before being capturd. He spoke of "Soely'g Flat "Camp Lincoln" and "Skyland," as ideal summer resorts. He told of Mr.

Huston's combat with a grizzly bear on Huston Flat, which experience was almost fatal to Mr, Huston and probably did button rioath. Ha related what could be found at Squirrel Inn, Pine Crest and Strawberry Peak, and told many anecdotes of the valleys in this vicinity. He described Mts. Gray-back, San Bernardino and Stover in a manner which proved very interesting to the students. He closed by giving the following legend in regard to the origin of the arrowhead, which explained he had received direct from the Indian chief: years ago, before the white man had come to this valley and the Indians alone resided here, one of them discovered the healing qualities of the hot springs on the mountains.

Accordingly many of the Indians moved to the vicinity of the springs and hull tnPTTl rpIvpo a little villaae. It happened that two young men oT the vlHage fell in love with the same dusky lady. For some time they both wooed her, but as neither would give up. referred the matter to the chief, who decided the two braves should fight a duel to decldo who was to be the successful lover. When the day for the combat came the chief measured off the distance and gave each warrior a bow and arrows.

At the command of the chief they both commenced firing, and soon one was killed. The victor walked over to his fallen rival, and plucking the arrow from his side, turned and shot it into the mountainside, where it stuck and finally grew to its present dimensions." Mr. Brown's talk was highly appreciated by the students, who listened to it with attention. BASEBALL.
