(CP) Winnipeg lawyer Hersh Wolch finds himself with an unusual role in the hostage drama' currently being played in this western Manitoba town. Wolch's client, a lone gunman, has been holed up with three hostages since early Monday morning. Wolch said in an interview Tuesday the gunman's choice of him as a lawyer apparently was a matter of chance, and he was called out of the courtroom to take the case. The gunman wants in cash and safe passage out of Canada for himself and his wife, now in a Brandon hospital with injuries suffered in an earlier shootout, Wolch said his client has described himself as "an average guy in a highly unusual situation." Chargex Mastercharge WINNIPEG (CP) The mother of Dennis Onofrey, the RCMP constable slain in a western Manitoba shootout, said Tuesday she has been worried about her son ever since he joined the force three years ago.

The constable, married with one child, was killed instantly when RCMP went early Monday morning to a motel in the town of Virdcn, to check a report of a stolen truck, and were met with gunfire. "The thought of him being killed was always in the back of my mind," the officer's mother. Rose Onofrey of Winnipeg, said in an interview. "But Dennis used to tell me that he could just as easily be killed walking across street. I wish it had been me instead of Townspeople pray for three hostages VIRDEN, Man.

(CP) About 75 persons attended a special church service Tuesday to pray for the lives of three hostages being held by a gunman in the nearby town of Oak Lake. One of the hostages, David Penny, 41, is a church member. The church minister. Rev. James Reaves, led the congregation of St.

Onofrey said her son, who is to be buried Thursday in Winnipeg, always dreamed of being a Mountic. He tried to join the RCMP about five years ago, but was rejected at that time because of poor eyesight. About two years later, she said, he applied to the Winnipeg city police and was accepted. But he clung to his dream of being a Mountie, and passed his RCMP entrance requirements with flying colors. He was the fourth Canadian police officer to be killed on duty this year.

Two other officers and a gunman's 28-year-old wife were injured in the shootout and are in hospital. "He just loved his work," said Mrs. Onofrey. "He would even go into work on his day off just to see if anything was happening. "When he first started, he was on highway patrol but he didn't find that very challenging.

He liked to be where the action is. If there was any danger he would be right up front" Mrs. Onofrey said she was worried about Dennis' one-year-old son Corrie and his wife, Paula, who is more than seven months pregnanf and is still "hysterical" about her husband's death. "I talked to her on the phone and she couldn't even talk. Dennis was so proud of his son and his wife.

Dorothy Maquabeak Francis, a Saulteaux Indian who was recently named to the Order of Canada for her work with native Indians, was asked to leave the Chinese Art Shop in Vancouver's Gastown area, but store owner Charles Chao said it was all a misunderstanding. "My most sincere apologies to Mrs. Francis," said Chao as the two met Tuesday to shake hands and straighten out the situation. "I believed her to be a white person she doesn't look like an Indian and I reacted too hastily. "We each felt we had been humiliated.

It was all a misunderstanding." Mrs. Francis said she entered the shop, after admiring the window display, and commented that she was disappointed that it was so dark inside. "Then he put out the light in the display case and he yelled at me, 'You get out and don't ever come back. You people don't belong here. You came from Chao, who has a law degree and who served as secretary to the minister of foreign affairs in China, said he was surprised to learn that Mrs.

Francis is an Indian. "She was looking at my things and made a comment which I felt criticized my items," he said. "Chinese people in Gastown are always bowing and scraping to whites. But I refuse to do that "I was wrong about Mrs. Francis.

We both suffer from inferiority complexes because we are minorities. We touched each others' pride. I am most sorry." Mrs. Francis said she felt the misunderstanding had been worked out "We are both friends now." CERMliC MID-WINTER SAVINGS! Tiles for kitchen, bathroom, shower area, wherever 4ft In. by 8 in.

Dr. Noel Kinsella, chief human rights commissioner for the province, said Tuesday that Sandra Nicholas Lovelace felt she had exhausted all avenues of redress in Canada. Kinsella said the woman wants a change in a Supreme Court of Canada verdict upholding Indian Act provisions which prohibit nonstatus Indian women from owning property on a reserve. An Indian woman who marries a non-Indian loses her status under the act: an Indian man who marries a non-Indian retains all his rights.

Kinsella said in an interview Mrs. Lovelace contends she cannot get housing on a reserve which is her home because of the federal act. He said her complaint to a UN committee in Geneva is legitimate and has a good chance of success. Canada is a signatory to the international human rights covenant and as such has agreed to let people who feel mistreated in Canada appeal to the international body. Under committee procedures, said Kinsella, Canada has six months after the committee acknowledges the complaint to take action.

He said the complaint was mailed Jan. 8 but no reply yet had been received. WALLY'S WORKSHOP Need help on a home fix-up? Here's the answer. Check our library of three-minute films on a wide variety of subjects, then watch the experts "on screen" show you how to do it. On' our Main Floor.
