Ms. Nicholls testified that she overheard a conversation between Haw and a girl in which Haw was alleged to have said there was a phone call and they had to meet some people and that Meva got out of the vehicle and started shooting. Haw was alleged to have said that the woman chased him and hit him on the arm with a board and that it took one bullet to kill the man and several to kill the woman. Lawyer Harry Rankin, acting for Gill, suggested to the witness that she had been in a drunken condition from the beginning of June and Nicholls agreed. Rankin suggested that she was confused as between what the police told her when they interviewed her and with what she heard from Haw, and Ms.

Nicholls also agreed with this suggestion. "I suggest your body and mind were in a condition of real turmoil as far as your ability to think and recall events," Rankin suggested. David Bruce Hill, 20, earlier told the court that in April 1977 that he had a conservation with Meva Gill and quoted Gill as saying he "had a job to do blowing some guy away for $1,200." Hill said that Haw told him later that the man had been shot first and that the lady started to cry and that Gill then shot her several times. The case continues before Justice George Murray. Paper carrier status challenged TORONTO (CP) Mary Cornish, a Toronto lawyer, said Tuesday on the CBC program The Fifth Estate that newspaper carriers should be considered employees and not independent businessmen. "A carrier who wanted to test the case could be on strong legal ground," she said during a segment of the show which depicted Canada's 100,000 carriers as underpaid and overworked. She said if carriers are independent businessmen working on a free-agent basis, they should be allowed to charge whatever they want for the papers they deliver, But if they are considered employees of the company, they should be entitled to such benefits as unemployment insurance, vacation pay and the minimum wage for students under 18.

Publishers told the CBC that the carriers sell newspapers at a price suggested, but not dictated, by the newspaper. During the show, the CBC said carriers are exploited because they are not paid extra when advertising inserts are added to the newspapers. Heritage Day halt for labor VANCOUVER (CP) While a proposed federal government bill declaring an annual paid statutory holiday, called Heritage Day remains to be passed, construction sites throughout British Columbia were closed Monday as 000 unionized workers marked the day anyway. The bill was introduced in Parliament in December, 1976, but shelved the following year when Secretary of State John Roberts said the government would not approve the holiday "in view of the economic implications of the legislation." Roy Gautier, B.C. and Yukon Construction Trades Council secretary-treasurer, said Heritage Day was first in 1976 and was marked by negotiated a as a paid holiday building trades workers in 1977 and this year.

428-6216. Red tape delays water clean-up By BEN TIERNEY Southam News Services WASHINGTON A report just produced by the United States General Accounting Office says inefficient bureaucracy in the U.S. is delaying action on pollution problems by the International Joint Commission. According to the report, one study involving water levels of the Great Lakes took 11 years because of the problem, which involves IJC financing, while on another occasion the U.S. was unable to meet its commitment to Canada under the Boundary Waters Treaty.

Says the report: "Since 1912 the commission (IJC) has reviewed over 60 applications and made over 40 studies. As the two SHELENKO, John On February 14, 1978. Mr. John Shelenko of 9513 103A passed away. He is survived by two brothers, Mike of Canora, and George of Norquay, one sister.

'Trash' killer's toll may be 32 LOS ANGELES (AP) Patrick Wayne Kearney, called the "trash bag murderer" and already serving a life sentence for three killings, was sentenced Tuesday to concurrent life sentences for each of 18 additional killings. The judge who heard him plead guilty said the case illustrates the need for a death penalty.

Kearney, a 38-year-old aerospace worker who surrendered last July, has led investigators from five counties to gravesites of 19 bodies and claims 13 other victims. Many of the dead, ranging in age from five to 28, were shot to death and dumped along Southern California highways in plastic trash bags. Many bodies were dismembered. Kearney was sentenced by Criminal Judge Paul Breckenridge, only hours after he pleaded guilty in municipal court to the crimes. In accepting the pleas, Municipal Court Judge Dickran Tevrizian Jr.

asked Kearney why he had committed the murders. Accused strangler admits 4 deaths LONDON, Ont. (CP) A report by senior police officers says accused strangler Russell Maurice Johnson admits he was responsible for the deaths of four women. two of them from Guelph, and for assaults on 10 other women over an eightyear period. The report, read Tuesday at a meeting of the London police commission, said Johnson admitted to police following his arrest last July that he was involved in each of 14 previously-unsolved cases.

Earlier this month, the 30- year-old automotive clerk was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the strangulation of three other women during a three-year period. Johnson was accused of murdering Diane Beitz of Guelph, Louella Jeanne George and Donna Veldboom, both of London. He now is being treated in the Ontario Mental Health Centre at Penetanguishene. The report, read by Supt. Harry McBride, said the Crown decided not to prosecute Johnson because psychiatric evidence showed he was incapable of appreciating the nature of the events.

The report said that Johnson admitted his involvement in the deaths of London women Mary Catherine Hicks on Oct. 19, 1973, and Eleanor Diane Hartwick on March 4, 1974, and Guelph women Alice Jane Ralston on Nov. 30, 1973, and Doris Ethel Brown on Aug. 8, 1974. Two Guelph police officials attending the meeting said they were satisfied that Johnson was the man responsible for the Ralston and Brown deaths.
