i BAX BKRNARDINO.CALIFORNIA. Ih. Vast. Mr. Nast is the Dickens of the crayon.

"With a touch he gives vacancy ex pression with a line he imparts intelligence to a sketch otherwise meaningless with a curve he gives character to a whole picture; with a stroke he changes the character, the expression, the "tone" and the type of a portrait. Far more quickly than the word painter can delineate ridicule, impart a reve-fctionof the character he is depicting, and make his subject or his victim present himself to the reader at a glance with his mental inconsistencies, incongruities, absurdities and weaknesses risible at a glance. And the moral inconsistencies, if any exist, will be as trikinelv portrayed as the mental weak- Bess or the physical defects. Mr. Nast is as it were a mind and a soul reader as well as a caricaturist, From the ex TvrcRflinn.

the lines and the angles of the face and the revelations of the' eye, whether consciously or unconsciously Mr. Nast appears to read the mind and to nrobe the soul and to re Hal much of both in his pictures, Hence the unprecedented success htt has achieved as a caricaturist This success has not been achieved by mere deftness of hand, The man who can make the portrait of a Blaine or a Butler reveal the hidden angularities of oul in the original is something far above a mere clever caricaturist, we attended his illustrated lecture last night and was astounded at the man'B rapidity of character painting. Yet how easy, how natural, how simple it all Beemed for this master of the brush. We can now understand why Thomas Nast was solonir a political power; a power before which Presidents winced and scoundrels trembled. He is certainly the greatest caricaturist of the age perhaps in prac tical effect of any age.
