Btbox Watms. A VIOLENT DEATH. Mike Dempsey Is Instantly Killed Near Victor. FATAL RESULT OF A SPREE. A Freight Engine Pathti Into rire Man Oa Band-Car Particular of tbe Accident.

Last evening at 6:20 o'clock, a fearful accident occurred on the California Southern road, about one and a half miles north of Victor, in which Mike Dempsey. section boss, was instantly killed and Larry Ennis badly hurt, all through their own fault and the love of drink. Dempsey, Ennis and three companions took a hand-car at Victor, after work, and went to Oro Grande, where they loaded up on oai liquor and procured a supply for the night, and then started on their return, all so badly intoxicated they could hardly navigate, especially Demp sey, who laid down while the other men, in their maudlin condition, attempted to work the car. They proceeded all right until within two miles of Victor, when they saw a train following. Some of the men wanted to get off the track, but Dempsey said no, that tbe train would not and they proceeded on, but only for a short distance, when the engine crashed into the car.

Three of the men jumped and escaped unhurt, but Dempsey was too drunk to more and Ennis, attempting to assist him. was caught and hurled 20 feet into the air, receiving severe, but not fatal injuries. Dempsey was killed instantly, his left arm being horribly mangled and cut off near the shoulder, and receiving violent internal injuries, which evidently caused bis death. The car smashed into splinters, while one of the wheels went under the engine, and bent the dampers and broke the rods, though doing no eerious damage. The train was imme diately stopped, and the dead man and hi? companions taken at once to Victor, where the train was side-tracked and with the engine and one car came to this city.

Dr. liowell, the company's physician, and Dr. Phelan were awaiting to render any medical assistance necessary. The body of Demspey was removed to the undertaking-rooms of the Grand Kapids Furniture company, and Ennis taken to tbe dispensary, where, upon examination, he was found to be only bruised a little. He had a bad gash across the face, below the right eye, and ins back was discolored from the shock, but no bones were broken.

and no internal injuries were found. Conductor Kinucan had charge of the train, which was an extra freight, and Engineer Gal van, one of the best ou the road, pulled the throttle. A Cockier reporter visited the dispensary about 10:30 last night, and found Mr. Gal van there, who related the following in regard to the accident were coming along about 18 or 23 miles an hour. The head-light was burning, and being just about dusk it was impossible to see the track as dis tinctly as at any other time.

The fireman was also coaling up, and every time he opened the furnace door made a bright light. When I first saw the car it looked like a black object, indistinct. and I thought it was cattle. I sounded the whistle, and by that time saw what it was. It was too late to avert the dis aster, and in a few seconds the crash came.

i saw go up in the air, and as soon as the train stopped ran back to the spot, but when I reached it Dempsey was dead. The track was a level stretch for about two milns, and the men could not help but see the approaching train." Un the hand-car was one burlv loafer, who has been hanging about Vic tor and Uro brande, and upon reaching Victor he wanted the men to lynch the engineer, but Ualvan has many friends there, who quickly gathered about and intimated that the first ruffian who made such a move would receive a dose of cold lead. On the train comintr down. the fellow was abusive, and Conductor Kinucan had to threaten violence to keep him quiet. Arrived here, he showed the physicians a little abrasion of the skin on one of his fingers, requesting a drink to brace him op.

Dempsey was a man weighing about 225 pounds, and was between 45 and 50 years of age. He has been a terribly hard drinker and lately has been drunk most ot the time. During the present week he and his companions had gone to Oro Grande three times for liquor and they always supplied themselves freely, generally getting home drunk. His wife, when informed of tbe accident, said she had been expecting it. When the men reached San Bernardino, all showed the effects of the liquor, being drunk then.

It was a sad occurrence, but one for which nobody except the men themselves and their uncontrollable appetites are to blame. Coroner Wainwright is in Los Angeles. but will retrrn this morning, and the inquest will probably be held this John Rlnf Moralised. Editor Courier Great credit is due the Courier for the boldness and honesty of its editorial remarks in last Sunday's ifsue. Tbe editor admits, as any well-informed person mast, the deca dence of what is called religion, and seems to think it a fact to be deplored.

Why so? The beauty, sublimity and comfort of any doctrine are no proofs ot its truth. The editor says he believes a lot are state, in the immortality of the soul. On what grounds? Where is the evidence? It will not do to say, "It is written," for that is begging the question. That argument assumes the divine authority of the Scriptures, which very many people a constantly increasing number utterly deny. To many persons, the loss of faim would be an irremediable loss but the reasonable man wants a reason for his belief he does not want to believe a falsehood, however beautiful.

Is it feared that the loss of religion implies the loss ot moitality? As a matter of fact, the conduct of any man depends not nearly so much on bis belief as on his own personal character. As to all these questions I am an Agnostic. These doctrines may be true, but I do not know, you do not know, nobody knows, and so far as we can see. knowledge of these matters is and ever will be an impossibility. But.

as we have no evidence whatever, and as the doctrine is essentially improbable, we surely may be permitted to doubt without blame or sin. Certainly, if there be a future state, if there be an Omnipotence, it will not be my belief in this life that will determine His judgment of me, bat my conduct. Further, if it be true, as I believe, that man must rely only on himself, that there is no power to be appealed to to correct his mistakes and save him from the consequences of his acta, the sooner mankind realizes that fact the better. Let us realise that wry broken moral law will as surely inflict suffering upon the offender as will a broken leg that is a good, serviceable code of morals. Modern Christianity was the highest product of evolution, but is there no higher point? I think so.

I look for the reliirion of humanity, for a system cf morals founded not upon the pri-Mumed commands of some alleged Deity, but on the unalterable facts of science. It is a long way off, perhaps, but it will surely come. If it is objected that I do not live up to my creed, I answer: Granted; who does? Let me quote in conclusion the words of Professor Tyndall, "In the presence of these mysteries let us lower our heads, priest and philosopher alike, and confess our ignorance or, as Ir.grsoll sums up the agnostic position in four words, "We do not know." John J. Ring. Redlands, January 28, 1890.
