1 i Ni' JOURNAL, Msaday, Nov. 2r, V.iii 5QS Shoppers' flood inundates strike-free stores Frank Hutton 93M Going food-shopping turned into a major expedition for Edmontonians Saturday a they crowded into the few large grocery stores untouched by strikers. Line-ups stretching the length of stores and half-bare shelves faced some shoppers during the peak periods Saturday. Some shoppers reported waiting in line almost an hour to pay for their food. 3l Woodward Edmonton's second-largest food retailer 4 experienced booming crowds due to the meatcutters' strike which has clpsed Safeway's and Loblaw's stores since Thursday.

At Woodward's Southgate, about 200 people lined up outside the doors before opening time Saturday to get first chance at stocking up their larders. "They just came charging right in," said assistant manager William Kliciak. Aisles were backed up almost to the rear of the store a', the morning peak and Mr. Kliciak said he expected the same thing in the afternoon. The store won't know by how much business was boosted until rush dies down and they can look at the figures, he said.

At Woodward's Westmount, a store spokesman said crowds were so heavy that staff was having difficulty getting stock onto the shelves. Friday, the store's doors were closed so staff could central the number of people entering the store, and Saturday line-ups again stretched the length of the floor during the rush hours. "My enly wish is that people would leave their kids at 7 7 A problem of signals I have problems with the reception of Channel 13 on my television set. I called CITV and spoke to someone in the engineering department. He me they have a great number of calls of that nature and that I should call a TV serviceman to adjust the fine tuning inside my set.

I called a serviceman, he came to my apartment, looked at the set, told me there was nothing he could do about it because the apartment building didn't have an antenna for Channel 13. Then he charged me $20 for a service call and left. Do you think it's fair that CITV gives misleading information of this sort? I wonder how many other callers have been stuck with bills for useless service calls. I feel CITV owes me $20. Out of Focus Edmouton We didn't hear the telephone conversation but it sounds like you and the CITV engineer EXCHANGED misleading information.

If you had told him you lived in a high-rise apartment building with an antenna on the roof he would never have told you that your set needed only a fine-tuning adjustment. What he gave you was good advice for someone living in a house with a set of rabbit ears on their TV set. Try to adjust the fine-tuning control, and if that doesn't improve the picture, call a TV serviceman. If you think about it, the job of the engineers at CITV is to make certain a clear signal leaves the transmitter. When he offered you free advice regarding the reception of the signal by your set, it wasn't really part of his regular job.

Think of it this way. If you HADN'T called CITV for free advice you most likely would have tried adjusting the fine-tuning controls yourself. When that didn't work you would have called a TV serviceman who would have told you there was nothing he could do. He would have charged you $20 and left. And that's exactly what happened.

Why do you feel CITV owes you $20? While we're on the subject of TV signals let's switch to Channel 3. There trouble there for a lot of viewers too. CFRN-TV is now using its new transmitter at Looma, southeast of the city, right next door to CITV's transmitter. People with rabbit ears on their sets who live close to where the CFRN-TV transmitter USED to be on Highway 16 West may find their reception a little less sharp. But for people who have rooftop antennae for Channels 3 and 5, the reception on Channel 3 is probably a lot less crisp.

That's because the Channel 3 antenna is pointing west instead of southeast. It's a pretty slippery time of year to be crawling around on the roof of your house but if you MUST, loosen the bolts on the longer of the two antennae and swing the bar around to the southeast or until your wife, who will be watching the TV picture and shouting orders at you, says it is about perfect. Now, some of those rooftop anennae feed into a mixer unit from which the line runs to the TV set. That unit is designed to eliminate or at least weaken, all signals except Channels 3 and 5. So your reception of Channel 13 will be weak until you add another antenna to the present set-up.

I The idea of the mixer unit is to eliminate ghosts and shadows caused by tall buildings in the vicinity. And that's the reason a lot of people living in high-rise apartments will find they have poor reception of Channel 13. They're plugged into the mixer unit by making use of the antenna on the roof of the building. The long wail to jay for food in crowded Co-op store home. We get four people in here for every shopper and with crowds like this it's a 1 the spokesman said.

The store has good supplies of basic foodstuffs such as the shelves, he said. Mr. Mancell predicted shoppers would have no difficulty getting their groceries as long as they weren't too fussy about buying a particular brand. milk, bread, eggs and sugar and he did not expect any difficulties with shortages. Edmonton's Co-op Shopping Centre, 12725 82nd reported their store has been "at capacity" since the strike If the strike continues much longer, he said shoppers will just have to get used to spending two hours buying their groceries instead of 25 minutes.

On Nov. 6 a man of the same description walked into Wright's Grocery, 9013 88th at about 5.45 p.m. and bought cigarettes, then City police are searching for a gunman responsible for two weekend robberies, and who is also a suspect in four other robberies and one attempted robbery within the past three weeks.

Police say the man walked into Maple Leaf Meat and Grocery, 7819 99th at about 6.30 Saturday, and walked up to the manager who was stocking soft drinks. The bandit pointed a gun at the man, and demanded money from the till. The manager told police he took the man to the till, and gave him about $200 in small bills, then took the man to the back cf the store, where the robber cleaned out another cache of small change. After getting the money, the manager said the gunman told him he had come back to the store, winch was robbed Nov. 19 by a man answering a similar description, because the manager had called police after the first robbery.

The manager described the gunman as 25 years old, black, about six-foot-one to two inches tall, weighing alwut 140 pounds, with medium short hair in an Afro style and wearing a green plaid car coat. About three hours later a man with the same description, possibly wearing a false mustache, robbed the 53rd Street Food Corner at 5304 118th Ave. of about $400. The manager of the store told police the man came in, pretended to be making a purchase, but pulled out a handgun when he got to the cash register. On Nov.

If you have one of those Channel 13, and the new Channel 3, will be clearer if you point the antenna towards the transmitters to the southeast of the city. For most folks Channel 3 and 13 will all be in the same general direction because CBC-TV's transmitter is at Sherwood Park. LIP grants Bullion! Commodities! Physical education should remain a compulsory program, says a report to be considered Tuesday by public school board trustees. Also recommended in the report is a revision of the current health education program to include nutritional studies and the reinstatement of a compulsory physical education course for all BEd students who will teach elementary grades. The report follows complaints by two Edmonton mothers, Geraldine Archibald and Annie Armstrong, about the compulsory nature cf physical education, the lack of consideration of health and nutrition in the program, and procedures for safety and for the reporting of accidents. Currently the department of education is organizing a study to evaluate the program throughout the province, the report stressed.

It also promises a monthly analytical record of all accidents and the provision of a suitable choice of activities among the alternatives offered. In addition, the report says provision should be made at the high schools so students can meet the minimum requirements and parents requesting a waiver of the physical education requirements for a high school diploma will be helped by the principal to get the request to the special cases committee. The feasibility of offering physical education classes on a full year basis in Edmonton's semestered high schools will also be examined. Art Treasures! Real Estate! Furthermore.
