Sunday, May 30, 1993 THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Page C3 Novell to Kmart considers subsidiary spinoffs purchase tion developers require different tools. Serius technology enables applications to be created by corporate business systems developers who are not necessarily trained as professional software programmers. A Novell objective is greater availability of applications that are distributed across computer networks. In addition to simplifying custom application programming Serius technology simplifies the linking of applications to various network services whether directories, security or communications. The portability of applications between different computers is also important to network users.

Today, applications built with Serius technology are portable between Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating system environments. "Serius is an important part of Novell's effort to help applications become independent of underlying operating systems and tial spinoffs in which Kmart would remain the majority owner of the subsidiaries, but it has no deadline or timetable. Antonini said Kmart's $3.5 billion store renewal program is yielding 35 percent increases in profits and 6 percent gains in sales at renovated stores. By year-end, 57 percent of the 2,400 U.S. Kmart stores will be in the new format and 200 stores are scheduled to be "renewed" in 1993.

Kmart plans sell of 14 Pace stores ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -Kmart whose profits have been hurt by problems with its PACE Membership Warehouse stores, said it is selling 14 of the outlets to Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Wal-Mart will convert the stores, which are located in five cities, to its Sam's Club format, it was announced Friday. In the past year, PACE'S profits have fallen amid intense competition from other warehouse stores, including Sam's Club and Price Club. By CECILIA DECK Knight-Ridder Newspapers TROY, Mich.

Kmart Corp. could increase its market value by nearly 20 percent by partially spinning off its subsidiaries, Chairman Joseph Antonini said Tuesday. Speaking with reporters after Kmart's annual meeting, Antonini said the Troy-based retailer is looking at spinoffs as a way to enhance shareholder value. He said Kmart's seven subsidiaries are worth about $4.5 billion, but "we don't think we're getting all the value. We think by spinning it off, we'll create the other $2 billion in value," he said.

Kmart which includes Kmart discount stores and the subsidiaries, has a market value of about $10.77 billion, based on Tuesday's stock price of $23.25. The subsidiaries are PACE Membership Warehouse, Builders Square, PayLess Drug Stores, Waldenbooks, the Sports Authority, OfficeMax and Borders. Analysts say Sports Authority is the most likely candidate for a partial spinoff, but poor first-quarter results will slow the process. Antonini said Kmart is studying par expands marketing, sales PROVO (BW) Novell, the computer networking company, has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Serius Corporation through a $17.25 million purchase of the 89 percent of Serius shares not already owned by Novell. The acquistition is expected to be completed before Novell's third fiscal quarter ends in July.

Serius has developed a library of objects, or software building blocks, for non-programmers to create custom applications by simply connecting various objects on a point-and-click basis. This modular approach to programming allows users to quickly assemble applications by selecting various icons that engage object-oriented modules of computer code. When linked, these modules, or prefabricated building blocks of code, run as complete custom applications that go beyond the limitations of generic, or horizontal, applications like spreadsheets.
