Or a man may tell his wife: "If it wasn't for you and the kids, I'd be the prime minister of Canada." That game, plus criticism of the bush pilot mural at Nisku, and the sculpture outside City Hall, motivated Love in a Greenhouse. "Edmonton has got to the stage where there about to be a cultural explosion, but materialists can't see where culture has any importance," said Graves. The main character in the play, Austin, played by John Rivet, the artistic director of Walterdale, has been persuaded to give up his job as a sales manager for a shirt company to devote himself to painting.

He's not sure he really wants to be an artist. His brother. Brad, played by Richard Wray, a Walterdale veteran, is the materialist in the plot. He can't understand how Austin could become an artist. The play also presents other conflicts, between new and old moralities and between the artist's desire to be Graves laughed.

"I'm really big in Paris, Kentucky. The play ran for a whole week there." Love in a Greenhouse was written for the province's centennial competition. It won the second prize of $500. The three-act play will run at Walterdale from Thursday to Nov. 16.

Tickets are now on sale at the Allied Arts in the Bay. Love in a Greenhouse is being rewritten as Graves the director puts the cast through rehearsals. "I'm in on the birth pangs, I can see it coming back at me, and know what's wrong," said Graves. "People keep asking me: 'Why don't you turn On the amateur scene here in Edmonton, I can both write and direct my own plays. It's much more valuable to me," he said.

After the play is produced, the final script will go to Samuel French for publishing. His age, a family, and a good job with the provincial government are other factors holding Graves back from trying for a career as a professional writer. He's the assistant clerk to the legislative assembly and the executive council. "I have an excellent job here that I thoroughly enjoy. I can't just throw it up and devote myself to the arts.

"And since there's no local professional scene here, I'd have to give up everything to break in. "What would I do? Suddenly rush off to Toronto?" Love in a Greenhouse reflects some of the conflicts in Graves' own life. It's a comedy, but with serious undertones. The idea for the play came from a book by a psychiatrist. Dr.

Eric Berne, titled Games People Play. One of the games people play is, "If it wasn't for you A wife may tell her husband: "If it wasn't for you, I'd be out in the world, doing all sorts of marvellous true to his own ision, and his customer's desire for what he as a customer expects from the artist. Love in a Greenhouse isn't the only Graves work to be seen in Edmonton this year. He's also written the story line for a musical. What's a Girl Like You to be put on by Jack McCreath in late January.

Graves has also written the continuity sketch for the annual Scandinavian show, Scandemania, that will be produced in February. He's been writing ever since he left the Royal Air Force in England. He went into the retail business, but did freelance feature writing and radio broadcasts. He came to Canada in 1964, then got a job in the provincial government publicity bureau in Edmonton, before he moved into his job as assistant clerk to the legislative assembly. He works on his kitchen table in the evenings.

"Then you go home and cry. You're the writer again, and you look at all those beautiful words that have been cut," he said. Graves, 35, wrote his first play for The Journal's annual literary competitions. The one-act play, "Yes, Dear" won first prize. After reading the comments of the judges and making some changes.

Graves directed that play at Walterdale. Since then, it's been published by Samuel French in Torontc and produced in both Canada and theJU.S. "WARREN GRAVES a piece, and say 'thank goodness'. But then I start to fidget, and I've got to start writing again. "If you find you haven't got time to write, then forget it.

Unfortunate but true. These figures can be changed, and so can the cost of insurance for younger male drivers. There is only one way; by reducing their accident rate. Even though younger men pay a lot more for insurance, they have the same opportunities as other drivers to reduce their own insurance costs. One accident-free year can bring a 15 reduction.

Three accident-free years and the savings are substantial. And those who pass approved driver training courses can obtain a further 10 reduction. If more younger men take advantage of these dividends by driving safely, the cost will be lower for everyone.
