Kirkpatrick retaliates by throwing punch, which soon led to a free-for-all on the field Majors getting to be rock 'em, sock 'em league against Steve Stone. In the second game, Ed Herrmann knocked in seven runs, three on a homer in the second inning. He doubled in two more during a five-run White Sox rally in the sixth. Pinch hitter Winston Llenas' two-run, bases-loaded San Francisco Giants 7-6 and 8-3.

Glenn Beckert singled in two runs in the eighth to break a scoreless pitching duel between Milt Pappas of the Cubs and St. Louis' Tom Murphy. Pappas allowed just five hits, while Murphy allowed two before being relieved in the eighth after giving up two singles. Tommy Hutton, Bob Boone and Cesar Tovar all hit solo homers for Philadelphia. Jim Lonberg, 5-6, held the Expos hitless until John Bocabella singled with two out in the fifth.
