AOVEITISEMEMT New Capilano Cinema opens tonight on shopping mall Mj 7, lis Capilano Gnema Feature tiiiiii ii it II f''' ill i i Designed to reflect the traditional glamor associated with the motion picture industry, the Capilano Cinema opens tonight. The new cinema, owned and operated by National General Corporation Cinemas Limited of Toronto is the first erected in Edmonton since the downtown Odeon was built 15 years ago. It is located in the Capilano Shopping Mall at 98th Ave. and Terrace Drive. On hand for the opening ceremonies will be Ron Shanin, producer-photographer of the film African Safari which will be the premiere attraction at the new $500,000 cinema.

Enhanced with the ultimate in beauty, luxury and glamor, the deluxe Capilano Cinema is NGC's first theatre to be built in Edmonton and its third in Alberta. The other two theatres are the North Hill Cinerama and the Brentwood Cinema, both in Calgary. John Kostiuk who formerly 1 managed the Guildford Cinema in North Surrey, B.C., has been the direction of Robert Hanna, supervisor of construction for NGC Cinemas. The approach to the Capilano Cinema is through a glazed vestibule under the protection of a generous canopy on the north and east side with the benefit of infra-red heaters comforting those waiting to enter. An elegant carpeted foyer, with a high ceiling and a modern concession counter for the convenience of patrons, highlight the entrance.

The cinema has fully draped walls with indirect ceiling lighting, a wood battened rear wall treatment and carpeted aisles. There are over 1,400 lineal yards of the rich gold drapes covering the walls. The building of approximately 11,000 square feet has a clear span steel joist system with a suspended acoustic tile ceiling. The 870 seats are luxuriously finished in royal red plush adding to the comfort of the cinema patrons. The exterior walls are constructed in a broken pale concrete masonry giving a bold, strong appearance to the building.

The exterior side walls follow the form of the tapered ceiling and the glazed entrance lobby is protected by a wide canopy. The mechanical system for the building is an all air system capable of heating, ventilating and artifically cooling the air to a degree necessary to maintain comfortable conditions within the occupied areas of the building. The air is distributed through one central fan system and the discharge air leaving the fan is maintained at a constant temperature of 55 degrees summer and winter. In the winter time the air temperature is maintained by introducing sufficient quantities of outside air and in the summer time it is done by means of artificial refrigeration. Reheat duct furnaces controlled by zone room thermostats maintain accurate temperature conditions throughout the building.
