THE EDMONTON JOURNAL, Thursday, Oct. 1967 Hardisty Nursing Home For The Aged Infirmed Ltd. NOTICE- Is hereby given that HAR Sharp Attempting The Impossible any, have ever come so clean with the public and the fact that it is not within the bounds of human nature to heed his speech to the House of Commons Wednesday, is the one about wage earners helping to keep wages down. The way he puts it is that He does these things in a manner rare in finance ministers, almost with -a twinkle in his eye. To me, he becomes a more intriguing figure every time out and it is not at all Mr Shsrn has not been noted for his surpluses In fact, he has been a deficit financer of almost unparalleled proportions has been trvine to beat fiscal good sense into the heads ot his caDinet colleagues in tho lihpral pnvernment.

sev eral of whom are his rivals to succeed Lester B. Pearson. SOME SUCCESS rwilv iwnntlv has had anv detectable measure of success, and he has been swinging tne ae nn the eirmire building propensities of his fellow cabi net members, ana snouting: "Timber!" in a voice that can be heard clear across the na tion. He' manapinp to keeD some kind of order in the cabinet ranks in the process, which must rank as one of the mir acles of our time. You get the feeling that he a nice to cut rinwn that medicare tree that is robbing many of the other plants of sunshine, but he willing to let it stand in the interests nf kwnint? neace in the family and of keeping Walter Gordon off his neck.

NICEST WAY He warns that tough decisions are coming up, but he does it in the nicest possible way, insisting that it is part of the finance minister's job to be a friend to the taxpayer. One of his more impossible suggestions, repeated in his By CHARLES LYNCH Southam News Services OTTAWA Some men try to do at least one impossible thing in their lives. But Mitchell Sharp is remarkable in that he is trying to do several impossible things, all at once. One of them is his effort to retain some measure of political popularity while occupying the post of minister of finance something no one has managed to do since the days of Douglas Abbott, who was bathed in a series of surpluses which he attributed to the "great good luck of the Liberal party." Dated, at Edmonton, Alberta, this 20th day of September, 1967. R. TOWNSEND Clerk of the Court Chambers warnings is merely incidental. HUMANITARIAN The pose that Mr. Sharp is striking is that of the humani tarian minister of finance, which is almost a contradiction in terms.

When the time comes to lower the boom, he will be able to say with all the piousness he can muster: "This hurts me more than it hurts you." The strange thing about Mit chell Sharp is that he really is a humanitarian and one ot the puzzles is how he ever got boxed into the finance portfolio in the first place. His views on foreign aid, for example, are almost radical. Despite the squeeze on his treasury, he wants our foreign aid program expanded and for the highes of motives. He regards the Canadian society as one of the most affluent in the world and thinks of an expanded aid program as the price of our membership in the human race. What is more, he believes the aid does some good and that with its help, the emerging nations really are going to emerge.

WITH TWINKLE Mr. Sharp is not above dangling goodies before the elector ate, such as his idea for a subsidy for the purchasers of low-cost housing not right away, but some time in me future, if all goes well. "I would hope," he says, "that both industrial and labor groups will be considering how best such a campaign might be organized to preserve Canada's competitive position in the world." TAX INCREASE What Mr. Sharp Is saying here is that if Canadian workers keep asking for more pay, he is going to have to raise taxes to take some of that money out of their pockets, so the robber of inflation won't steal it from them. Such a tax increase, it seems to me, is inevitable but when it comes, Mr. Sharp will be able to say that Canadian wage earners imposed it upon themselves, despite his warnings. Mr.

Sharp will be able to plead that he was completely frank with the electorate and in large measure he will be right. Few finance ministers, if chinists, are expected to vote on the issue.
