Canada may be something of an anti-climax. For Mark Spitz, bolder of three world records, it was an anti-climax of sorts in the South Side Swimming Club's first annual invitational meet on the weekend at the University of Alberta. He wasn't all that much of a disappointment to the big gest swim crowd of the year, setting two Canadian open re cords and equalling another. But he was a disappointment to himself. "No, I wasn't happy with that," he barked sharply in reply to a reporter's question.

"I'm out of shape. I haven't had enough serious work since the NCAA championships a month ago." Spitz, the freshman star with Indiana University, had just returned from a week in France where he was sent to dedicate two swimming pools. He was the only Canadian record setter in the open division, although two Alberta open and two national age-group records were broken. While Spitz was off form, the other Indiana swimmer tne two-day crowd of 1,000 came to see, George Smith a Nsbt graduate, was having his problems. Both SDitz and Smith won everv final they swam in.

However, although scheduled to meet in several events, one or the other passed up events for various reasons. "It disturbed me and some of the other officials," said K.H. Vandonselaar, one of the South Side coaches. Spitz broke the 400-yard freestyle record of 3:55.6 with a time of 3:52.0 in the second event of the meet, beating his nearest rival by 53 seconds. He tied the 100-butterfly record of 51.8, but his American record in the same event is 49.1.

Craig Pogontcheff of Calgary set the national record in the 11 and 12 boys' 100-metre breast stroke with a time of 1 minute, 11.7 seconds, to better the previous mark of 1:22.4. Two open Alberta records also were touched by Montana swim mers.

Mary Moberly, of Great Falls, tied the Alberta open record of 40.5 seconds in the 10 and 11 girls' 50-metre backstroke. Dick Dolan, of Billings, set an open Alberta record in the 50-metre freestyle in the 10 year and under class with a time of 32.7 seconds, topping the previous mark of 32.8. Wendy Kasting of Lethbridge set two Alberta age class records and tied another. She won the 11 and 12 year girls' 100-metre freestyle with a time of 1:06.8, one-tenth of a second better than the old time, and shattered that age record in 100- metre backstroke in 1:16.9. The previous mark was 1:18.5.

Susan Hunt of Lethbridge set an Alberta age record in the 50- SPRING RACING can take a tenth of a second or so off your record'. The Jasper Place Swim Club set the other age-group record, swimming the 13-14 400-yard medley relay in 4:19 2. The JP club, however, was second to Vancouver Amateur who covered the distance in 4:41.8 for an Alberta Open record. Cardinal SC of Winnipeg set the other Alberta open record, skimming the rater in 2:13.5 to win the girls 11-12 200-medley relay.
