EDMONTON JOURNAL. Wednesday. 12. 4 1 Yukoners hold title as drinking champs Focus on PEOPLE Quebecers, at just over 15 gallons per year, appear to drink more. Arid so do Ontari-ans, whose average per capita seems to be 19.3 gallons.

But in Ontario, as in B.C., the large sales volumes for -vine do not necessarily mean that all wine produced is drunk locally. It could be sold to another province. Alcoholic beverage sales for Ontario totalled 148 million gallons, worth $097 milbon in Quebec, 116 million gallons, worth $430 million; in Manitoba. 17 million gallons, worth S93.5 million; in B.C.. 43 gallons, worth $224 million.

And residents of the Northwest Territories, which border with the Yukon, were pretty close to the Canadian average as far as consumption. It cost them $164 a year, however. ago, nationwide booze Tules totalled $1.35 billion and 10 years ago, $900 milbon. Alberta seems to be the average Canadian province when it comes to drinking. The 1,027,000 Albertans consumed 28 million gallons, or per capita, 15.2 gallons of beer, 1.3 gallons of liquor, and 1.1 gallons of wine.

It cost them $90 each. Drinking seems more moderate in the Atlantic provinces but rises to match or surpass the national average going westward. Newfoundland, with a per capita average consumption of 11.6 gallons, appears to be the most abstemious Canadian province. Prince Edward Islanders and New Brunswickers drink 12 gallons per capita, but Nova Scotians drink a little more 14 gallons a year. The promotions of three senior Canadian Armed Forces officers were announced Tuesday in Ottawa hy the detente department.

Rogers of the United States said Tuesday the Vatican has tried to obtain the release of U.S. prisoners of war in North Vietnam but "so far to no avail." There have been hints that the Vatican has initiated contacts on behalf of the American prisoners, but this was believed the first time an American official has drawn a clear picture of the Holy See's efforts. Rogers spoke at a news conference here shortly after meeting with Pope Paul in private audience at the Vatican. The Pope told Rogers he Moll.

Promotion Dpoartment, The Edmonton Journal Sou til a in News OTTAWA The hardy Yukoners are Canada's drinking champions, way alwve the national average. They polished off an average of gallons each of alcoholic leverages in the year ending March SI, according to Statistics Canada. That is the average consumption of every one of the men. women, and children living in the Yukon. They drank 562,000 gallons of alcoholic beverages, worth S4.2iS9.000, spending $23ii per capita.

For other Canadians, the per capita alcohol consumption averaged out to 13 gallons, at a cost of $85 each. Figures released Tuesday by Statistics Canada showed nationwide sales of liquor, wine, and beer totalling S1.86 billion, up nine per cent from the previous year. The intake: 395 million gallons of alcoholic beverages. With a per capita average of 16 gallons per year, Canadians still favor beer over other beverages. They drink less than one gallon of wine each, and just over a gallon of liquor.

Almost all of it is locally-made stuff, as imports for 1971 accounted only for $03 million worth of alcoholic beverages. In fact Canada exports three times what it importsexports totalling million in 1971. When consumption goes up, so do government revenues. The figures showed that provincial government made $500 million from the sale of booze, up 8 3 per cent from the previous year, while the federal government revenue rose fi.9 per cent to $424 million. The combined total is almost half of the sales.

But higher prices don't seem to discourage Canadians from drinking. Cowhurn intends to use his Tiger Moth in his practice in the McBride-Valemount area of east-central British Columbia. It was shipped to Prince George, Kid miles west of here, from England, but not al in one piece. It came disassembled in several crates, and required four days for reassembly. "I learned to fly them in F.ngland," Dr. Cowburn said.

"There used to be a lot of them around, but now they are rare." When Dr. Cowburn bought his Tiger Moth from a friend, there were 20 registered in the whole country. There are Canadian-built Tiger Moths, but they're a bit different. They have tail wheels, while Dr. Cowburn's Moth has a skid.

The Canadian models have brakes; Dr. Cowburn's doesn't. Despite those two" minor drawbacks. r. Cowburn's plane appears to have a feature useful in mountainous eastern B.C.

It has short take-off and landing characteristics, needed a runway less than 300 feet long. And in this pollution-minded world, Dr. Cowburn can fly with a clear conscience: like new cars, the little Tiger Moth uses unleaded gasoline, which is also cheaper than aviation fuel. But these things don't really account for the doctor-plot's love affair with his Tiger Moth. 'It's said the plane mav be worth $14,000.

but Dr. Cowhurn, who won't say how much he paid for it, has a different conception of its value: "It's priceless for me, because it has such an interest for me."
