Dr. Macdonald also served briefly as a lecturer at the University of Bristol before coming to the University of Alberta in 1921. While at the university here he was instrumental in revising the arts courses so that the student had greater latitude in courses available to him. Dr. a a 1 also served on the committee dealing with education for soldiers returning from the Second World War.

He is survived by his wife, of 11027 86th Ave. and one brother, Donald, in Scotland. A private service was conducted Saturday from Hain-stock's Chapel by the Rev. Dr. E.

Dr. John Macdonald, 85, has died. In the seven years prior to his retirement in 1952, Dr. Macdonald had been dean of the faculty of arts and science, University of Alberta. He was named dean emeritus in 1953.

Dr. Macdonald was born at Perthshire, Scotland and took his elementary and secondary education at Pitlochoy, Scotland before taking a five-year course in philosophy and psychology from the University of Edinburgh. He was one of the original students in a laboratory class in experimental psychology, one of the first in the English-speaking world. He subsequently became assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Edinburgh and instructor at the George Heriot School for Boys and the Dundee HighSchool. Dougan, 20, of Scarborough, and Barbara Mentz of Woodstock, died when their car slammed into a camper on Highway 11, six miles north cf Barrie, Ont. They were among at least 63 Canadians to die on the highway and among the 89 to die accidentally as summer's first long weekend hit full stride. An elderly woman was drowned when a car rolled off a ferry in Georgian Bay.

A young man was burned to death about 60 miles east of Toronto when the car in which he was riding ran into a service station gas pump. The pump exploded. Jim Windeate, 56, dies in Hope, B.C. A former resident of Edmonton and immediate past-president of Hook Signs Jim Windeate, 56, died recently at Hope, B.C. Bora in High River, he joined the company in 1936 as an office clerk and later served as company secretary-treasurer.

He was elected president in 1966 and retired in 1970. Mr. Windeate saw service in the Second World War as a navigator with the RCAF. He was shot down over France, but escaped to neutral Switzerland. Mr.

City man jailed in wounding CALGARY (CP) Larry Frederick McMurter, 23, of Edmonton has been sentenced to four years imprisonment on a charge of wounding with intent. District Court was told that McMurter beat a man in a southwest Calgary washroom April 2, breaking a wine bottle over his head and kicking him. The man lost his right eye and gall bladder.

The beating occurred after McMurter, the victim and two others had become intoxicated on wine they were drinking in a room, court was told Friday. Slater, an investment banker, said in making the offer: "Fischer has said that money is the problem. Well, here "it is. What 1 am saying to Fischer now is, 'Come out and play'." Slater's offer was made through Dr. Max Euwe, presi-d of the International Chess Federation, and was relayed to Fischer in New York, a spokesman for Slater said. Fischer faces a deadline of noon Tuesday to be in Reykjavik for his match with Spas-sky.

The American champion was reported as saying he would not appear in Iceland unless his financial demands were met by the tournament organizers. Slater, chairman of Slater Walker Securities which has worldwide business affairs, has proposed a package containing several alternative offers. One is to double the prize money for the match which now is $125,000. The winner would get $78,125 under present terms. Air search for 3 men called off GHOST LAKE (CP) An air search for a missing plane with three men on board was called off Saturday when an article of clothing belonging to one of the men was found in Ghost Lake, 25 miles west of Calgary. Missing and presumed drowned are William Rudolf Marx, 47, William George Fair, 65, and Dr. Vernon Roy Fanning, 39, all of Calgary. The light amphibious aircraft, piloted by Mr. Marx, was on a demonstration flight from Springbank Airport west of Calgary when reported missing Wednesday.
