Big band's Helen O'Connell dies By DAVID HINCKLEY Daily News Staff Writer Helen O'Connell, a knockout blond whose sultry voice reminded millions of World War II GIs what they were fighting for, died yesterday of cancer in San Diego. She was 73. Born in Brooklyn, she moved with her family at age 3 to Lima, Ohio, and sang in local bands as a teenager before Jimmy Dorsey hired her in 1939. Within three years she and duet partner Bob Eberly had scored No. 1 hits with "Amapola," "Green Eyes" and "Tangerine." While her music was not revolutionary, she was one of the most riveting of the big band divas for the cool way she wrapped her voice around a ballad.

She left the band in 1943 after re- The judge also ordered him to pay a $30,000 fine and $31,000 to Silverman for, among other expenses, security guards she hired to protect herself. U.S. Attorney Michael Chertoff, who had requested an 18-month term, called the sentence fair. "There is nobody who is above the law, nobody whose position places them above the reach of the law." Wachtler's attorneys, Wells, Charles Stillman, and the ex-judge's son-inlaw Paul Montclare, argued that Wachtler's behavior was brought about by toxic reaction to potent drugs and his bi-polar illness. "This man is in his 60s.

He has spent his entire life doing good deeds," Wells said. "To many people, this man was a legend." Fictional 'pervert' Yet Chertoff noted that that same legend carried out a campaign that terrorized Silverman, often in the guise of the fictional character he created, Texas private eye David Purdy. Chertoff said he had an image of "a mother, lying in bed in the wee hours of the morning, her daughter down the hall, wondering whether there is in fact a David Purdy, a self-described obese, disgusting, ramshackle GOREN BRIDGE OMAR SHARIF HIRSCH Both vulnerable. Friday, At one table South decided West was vealing that two years earlier she had secretly married finance heir Clifford Smith. Seven years, three children and one divorce later she returned to show business, gradually rebuilding her career as a singer and a personality.

She was the original interviewer on the "Today" show, with Dave Garroway, and she hosted the Miss Universe telecast for nine years. She had a summer TV show with Russ Morgan and her own summer show in 1957, and in later years she was a regular guest on "Tonight" and other programs. She also appeared in the movies, including "'The Fabulous Dorseys," and for years was spokeswoman for Polaroid. She sang on tours with colleagues such as Rosemary Clooney and Margaret Whiting until last month. Her appearance and voice remained remarkably youthful, a particularly impressive achievement measured against the often rocky path of her love life.

A tense splitup Her divorce from Smith in 1951 was tense and left her with the three children to rear on her own. She had another daughter with novelist Thomas Chamales but separated from him when he began beating her. He died in a fire in 1960. Her third marriage, to Robert Pares in 1965, was annulled before she married Frank DeVol, who survives her along with her daughters. In recent interviews, however, O'Connell said she had a happy life, that she enjoyed singing and spoiling her grandchildren.

SONGSTRESS Helen O'Connell in 1979. WACHTLERFROM P. 7 four children and their spouses were in the courtroom yesterday. Wachtler was composed through much of the hearing, resting his hand on his right cheek, index finger pointed up. Other times he looked upset, his face red and his jaw clenched.

After the sentencing, Wachtler commented dryly, "I've had better Thompson rejected his request to serve his term at a community correctional center in New York City, recommending instead that he be sent to the federal correctional institution in Pensacola, Fla. The low-security dormitory-style prison was Wachtler's second choice because it is near his mother, but the Bureau of Prisons has the final say. Wachtler is to turn himself in Sept. 28, allowing for the Jewish holidays. With good time, he could be released to a halfway house in months, said one of his attorneys, Theodore Wells.

Further sanctions Thompson also ordered Wachtler to serve 2 years probation and 500 hours of community service. She ordered him to stay away from Silverman; her daughter; her new boyfriend, David Samson, and Samson's wife and children. Raymond's Friday Cemetery. 2-4 7-9 Visiting P.M. probably leading from a six-card suit. Declarer won the first trick with the ace, crossed to the queen of clubs and led the jack of diamonds. When East followed low, declarer guessed to rise with the king (an anti-percentage play, but clearly the best shot to keep West off lead) and had no problem making nine tricks after the missing honors crashed on the next round.

At the other table South elected to hold up the ace of hearts. When the suit was continued, East worked out that, if declarer held both the king and queen of diamonds, nine tricks were there for the taking. The only way to defeat the contract was if West held the queen of diamonds. So East jettisoned the ace of diamonds! There was no way for declarer to come to nine tricks without at least two dia-, mond winners. And declarer could not score two diamond tricks without first letting West gain the lead to cash enough heart tricks to sink the contract.
