Page 10, The Dally Review, Morgan City, Wednesday, November 8, 1989 tate News Roundup fs Bossier City Man Could Be Linked to Abduction Scheme t- BOSSIER CITY. La. tAP) Investigators are trying to determine if there is any connection between the disappearances of children in Ohio and Minnesota and a Bossier City man accused in two Louisiana kidnappings, police said. James Edward Vachuska, 28, was at-, a 1 I charged this week in the September abduction and assault of a Bossier City boy and the rape of an 11 year-old girl kidnapped last month from a Shreveport hotel, Bossier City Police Chief Lynn Austin said Tuesday. Vachuska was arrested without incident by Bossier City and Shreveport police officers and FBI agents Monday afternoon at a Louisiana State University Shreveport parking lot.

Vachuska was charged by Bossier City police with simple kidnapping, aggravated oral sexual battery and aggravated rape. Shreveport police charged him with one count of simple kidnapping in the October incident. Vachuska's bond was set at and he remained in the Bossier City Jail. A court date had not been set, Austin said. Bossier City police spokesman I I m-rm H-f" all 5 a 1 1 1 'mmfi- FA QITrffiB i uu i LJU I 4h acting MCFD Chief Drue Clement.

On hand for the presentation were, from left, Morgan City Chief Administrative Officer Larry Bergeron, firefighter Mark Stephens, LaFleur, Clement, operator Dean Adams and firefighter Heath Landry. Capt. Sidney Roy, not pictured, also attended the convention. PROTECTIVE FLOOR MATS made from recycled plastic were donated to the Mor-. gan City Fire Department by Turtle Plastics of Cleveland, Ohio, at a recent firefighters convention in St.

Louis, Mo. Local firefighters attending the convention brought the mats back and, in turn, presented them to Mayor Cedric LaFleur and tf liking Itflfcr, John Brann said the aggravated rape and simple kidnapping charges were filed in connection with the Oct. 21 abduction and rape of an ll-year-old Robeline girl. Authorities said the girl was blindfolded and taken to rural Bossier Parish, where she was raped. She then was wrapped in a sheet and taken to a rural Harrison County, Texas, bridge and either thrown or pushed from the span The child, however, was able to walk to a nearby house and get help.

"We can prove that the rape occurred in Bossier Parish," Brann said. "Shreveport police are working on the kidnapping charges." The simple kidnapping and oral sexual battery charges filed by Bossier City police against Vachuska are in connection with a Sept. 16 incident in which an 11 -year-old boy was abducted, assaulted and then released in rural PeSoto Parish, Austin said. An LSU-S official said school records showed Vachuska attended Wilmington College and the University of Findlay, both in Ohio, before transferring this fall to Shreveport. He was majoring in computer science at the time of his arrest.

Brann said police were flooded with telephone calls Monday after composite drawings of suspects were shown on a syndicated television show in the October disappearances of a Bay Village, Ohio, girl and a St. Joseph, Minn boy The drawings were similar to a composite drawing of a suspect in Shreveport and Bossier City abductions, Brann said. Bay Village police officer David Schultz said authorities have been looking for 10-year-old Amy Mihal-jevic since she disappeared Oct. 27 from a shopping center. Bay Village is about 14 miles west of Cleveland on Lake Erie.

The Stearns County, Sheriff's Office in St. Cloud is investigating the Oct. 22 disappearance of 11 year-old Jacob Wet-terling. Wetterling was abducted at gunpoint near his St. Joseph, home.

Duke, a former KU Klux Klan national leader, was elected to the Louisiana House as a Republican candidate in a special election last February.

He has indicated an interest in running against incumbent Johnston, but has made no official announcement that he is a candidate for either the Senate or the governor's post In September, Duke said he was looking at the Senate race "very carefully." He said then he would likely announce "early next year." Duke's aide said Tuesday that he was out of the office and unavailable for comment. The Senate race is Oct. 6. The governor's election comes tn the fall of 1991 At least two other Republicans have publicly announced their interest in running against Johnston Secretary of State Fox McKeithen and state Sen. Ben Bagert of New Orleans.

In a "personal note" from Duke that is a part of the brochure signed by Farrell, Duke said he talked to a political analyst about winning "a race for the S. Senate or governor." Duke said he won't need as much money as his opponent, but it will take for mailings, and more for television, campaign signs, telephone banks and other expenses. Duke has said he is no longer associated with either the KKK or pro-Nazi groups. However, the ad dress of his legislative office is also the headquarters: for the National Association for the Advancement of White People, which he heads. BATON ROUGE, La.
