PAGE NINE In Soortina BIG CROWD AT SLUGGING BEE SCOUTS' RACES MOTOCYCLE AT URBITA ARE CLOSELY MEET SPK CONTESTED San Diego Rider Badly Hurt as He Hits Ground at a Fast Pace. Twenty-five hundred people yesterday witnessed the annual Thanksgiving motocycle races of the San Bernardino and Redlands clubs. There was no exceptional time, but the races produced close and exciting finishes.

Redlands won the perpetual challenge tri-clty cup race from the San Bernardino team. The time on the nine miles, covered in three relays by the three sets of riders, was 10:11, which is considered fast. Mclntyre, Peck and Mc-Intyre made 'up the Sah Bernardino team, and Mulvehill, West and Durell ihe Redlands team. The fastest five milo race was in the five mile stripped stock, 61 cubic inches and under, the second event, which was won by Durrell of Redlands on an Indian in 4:49 4-5. Jlclntyre of this city was second, on a Harley-Davld-fon.

The rastest Race The fastest race of the meet was the second heat, three miles, of the 15 mile free-for-all. In this heat Shaw of liedlands on an Excelsior was first, time 2:55 3-5, or less than a mile a minute. W. J. Hamilton riding a P.

'Shaw of Redlands on an Excelsior took the first two heats tne IS mile free-for-all, and dropped to third in the last.

Badly Hurt The only mishaps of the meet occurred in the final race, the 10 mile free-for-all for singles and doubles. At the tightli mile, Don Van Gorder of San Diego on an Excelsior skidded on the turn and In attempting to right himself threw himself to tbe other side with such force that he fell from the hiachine. He was working a mile a minute In an attempt to take first place, and struck the ground with terrific force, badly Injuring his left jaw and eye. In the same race House, also of San Dlcgo fell, but was not severely Injured. The Officiary The officers of the meet were: judges, W.

There are several bad breaks In the surface of the track. Following are the results: The Hesclts Three mile novice R. Red- lnnds, first; Harley-Davld-bn, second; time 3:45 1-5. Five mile stripped tstock, 61 cubic inches and under Durrell, Indian, Red-lands, first; Mclntyre, Harley-David-son, San Bernardino, second; time 4:69 4-5.

Seventeen Hits Including Seven Round Trip Hits. BT CLYDE A. BVUCIMAN. The Santa Fe Specials ran up against class yesterday afternoon and class will tell every time. The Stars outplayed their city rivals In every department of the game, the exact ratio ibelng.

16 to 3. The Urbita boys hit the ball to all corners of the lot, and tiring of tills they hit 'em over the fence for a change. They hammered Meyers' delivery until the rattle of the Stai heavy artillery had a suffragette meeting looking like a deaf and dumb mutes' convention. While the Stars were piling up won derful batting averages, the mechan ics were fielding with all the ease and grace of a rheumatic elephant. Nine times the west enders let chances trickle through their hands, thus greatly aiding the flood of Star runs.

In fact it was so bad that the mix-up lost all possible resemblance of a ball game in the early innings. In First Inning-. The Stars started oft in their usual style, scoring in the first inning on Al-tizer'a hard eingle and two juicy errors. This scant margin predominated until the third, when a land slide hit the Santa Fe team. "Chief" Smith started the trouble with his first hit of the year.

Dave Al-tizer drove out the first home run ot the day, scoring Smith. Walsh whiffed; and Kauffman walloped the ball the fence for another home run. error, a stolen base and two singles produced the last run. Pitcher Meyers came to between innings and wanted to know how many more were hurt In the landslide. One measly run came home in the fourth, ibut that Is a mere trifle compared with, what came later.

A hit 'batter, a walk, two errors( one stolen base, two singles and a home run sent four runs chasing home In the next session. Ah error followed by Schmidt's second sent two runs around the circuit in the sixth. Three more home runs, two singles, and a double completed havoc by sending four more runs over the counter in the "last two innings. On the Walk. A walk and a home run by Hale In the fourth and a home run by Meyers in the fifth represents the total of the Specials' efforts.

Thus one of the most disastrous games of the year was won and lost by teams that have been proven to belong in different classes. The Santa Fe hoys played hard, but they were up against a team that has yet to meet defeat, and they have met some good teams. The Stars played grand ball, fielding without a semblance of an error, run nlng bases In grand style, and hitting like sluggers that they truly are. Going giMne. Seven home runs 1s going some for one team, and nine in one game comes very near being a record.

The big home run man was Helnie Schmidt, who drove three round trip swats over the fence, besides fielding a great game. "Chief" Smith pitched a nice game, holding the Specials well In hand and fanning eight men. Besides pitching good tall, he drove out three hits out of five trips to -the plate.
