Southern California is by fur the better known district nmong eastern people, who constantly rend about its wonderful climate and resources, while the North hardly takes the trouble if informing li.om of all it litis to oiler. To meet I ho demand for ace uninodu-tions, tho Southern 1'acilic Company has mado arrangements to establish new lines of cars, principally second-class tourist coaches, from Chicairo. As the hulk of the travel is tending southward, most of these cars will bo run on the Southern racitic into I.os Angeles and other cities below tho Tehachapi mountains. A great variety of routes have been selected. The "lines" will be opened on November 1, aud tourist cars will be urn from Chicago, St.

Ono of the most interesting incidents that marked the funeral ceremonies in tho senate the other day was occasioned by the arrival of Sir Julian Pauncefote. The president, members of the supremo court and all other visitors entitled to the floor hud taken their seats, and the short wait preceding the opening of the serv ices had beifun to grow irksome when the main door opened, and Sir Julian, dressed in a close fitting I'riuce Albert, entered.

Ho took a few steps forward and then paused, while the master of cere monies announced in a distinct voice, "The embassador of England to the Unit ed Htates." The pause was momentary, The president and every one present rose instantaneously in their Beats! The English diplomat bowed with the easy grace of a man who is not embarrassed by the honors shown him, and with a firm stop and erect though respectful bearing passed down tho center aisle, past the president and cabinet, to the eat assigned him in the front lino of chairs. ODDS AND ENDS FROM ONTARIO The Ontario Ktcunl has these items: Tho cannery handled 220 tons of poaches this season. A slight earthquake was felt at 3:03 afternoon.

There were shipped last week 11,510 pounds green fruit, 124,875 pounds dried fruit and 32 boxes lemons about seven car loads. Before another Issue of the Reeord it is probable that Mr. Osborti will have let the contract for his brick block, on A street. This is a larger number than was estimated by those most familiar with the voting fists, and would indicate that we have in the colony population of 2500.

The vote in the two precincts is divided as follows: Ontario 350, North Ontario 100. It is hoped that every man will take an interest in the election, to that the full vote may be polled. The total vote cast here in 18'J2 was 371 in 18U0 it was 240. So far as reported W. McFatridge has the champion peach tree in respect to growth at least.

Mr. McFatridge brought a limb to the liecord office last week to show what Cucamonga s-41 could produce. It was 10 feet inches long, and the entire growth wa made in seven months. The tree from which it came was planted eighteen months ago, being a mere twig a quarter of an inch in diameter. The twig now has a circumference at its butt of inches, and yielded this season 75 pounds of peaches.

The soil in which it is grown is very' sandy, though a heavy vegetable mould is 'found a foot or two below the surface. (7 1 1 SOCIAL SEASON IN REDLANDS BRILLIANT FARTT BT THE EK IGBTI Or PYTHIAS. Ladies with captivating toilettes and gentlemen in neat evening drees animated the picture, above and around which was suspended long streamer! and drooping folds of red banting, while shades of red tissue softened into rich, mellow light the brilliant rays from the electroliers. Time sped merrily on as the successive numbers were checked from the nroeramme of danses and the pleasure-seekers "Chased the hours with flylut feet" During the intermission of half an hour, just before midnight, refreshments were served iu the dining room adjoining the hall. After this needed rest dancing was resumed. Enthusiasm ran higher as the hour grew later, nor were there any signs of flagging interest until 2 o'clock when the final waits was over, wraps and overcoata donned, and the carriages in wailing whirled rway.

Much credit is due the committee whose efforts made the occasion the success that it was. A very good audience assembled at the Academy of Music last evening to Jisten to T. V. Cator, who aspires to be a Uniled States Senator, while he discussed the issues of the day from the standpoint of a Populist. Mr. Cator took for his starting point the proposition that the thing from which this country has most to fear is the inordinate growth of phitocmcv, a proposition lie held to be admitted I all parties.

As wealth is couMantly accumulating and coming more and more under the control of the few, the debtor class is taking in more and more of the misses, and interest upon debts la becoming an ever increasing burden, which cannot be cast That tariir legislation would cure such an evil as this, which had grown up both in highly protected America end in freiMradja theX speaker held could noTTJeT reasonably expected.
