Preserve Them According to the Mature of the I'laut, Those who wish to enjoy tho whole of tho short life of their cut flowers In stoad of only a email portion of it Will not sottlo down npon any one undeviat-ing method of preserving them, tut Will rather vary it, according to the dif-forout oauses which load to their tlecay. 'Xuko, lor lnHtauco, the nowers of a tnconlent nature, like the iris. Tho (teniH, when pat into water, slough sway and soon give forth an unpleasant) Odor. There are two remodlua which may be applied in this uiso. Either one (hould put a mild disinfectant in the water aud frequently cbaugo it or out off the ends of the stalks at short Another flower whoso stem most rap idly decays and con-opts the water is mignonette, and it is often best, therefore, to Bticriflco it while its head is still freshly green.

Heliotrope, like mignon-ette, should always bo pot in water by Itself, for it not only fudes and turns brown rapidly, bnt it will kill almost any flower put with it. The cause of decay iu hard wooded plants liko the azalea and oamolia is that they do not take tip enough water, not that they have any tendency to pollute it, so that to cut their stalks frequently would be of little avail. But if when putting each flowers iu a vase or bowl you inuke sure that tbe lowest loaves uttuched to the blossoms are under water tho etTcct is magical. Ferns, und especially maidenhair, are very short lived when they have to look to tho stein alone for nourishment, and tho most effectual way to preserve them is to sco that tho lower part of every frond is well under water. Cut flowers require us a rule a far greater quantity of water than is given them.

Flowers should always bo placed in water aa soon as possible after being picked. When -received by post in a somewhat wilted condition, an immediate plunge into hot water with a little sal volutilo will accomplish wonders in tho way of reviving them. And if you wish to wear flowers in your bair or on your corsage, they may be mude to rotuin their freshness for an entire evening by putting a bit of sealing wx over the ends. PAWNED A STOLEN CHARM A Jeweler ana Pawnbroker tl.nlr.ed by Btrang-er. Vie A well-dressed stranger stepped into Moore Lewis' jewelry store Friday afternoon and asked to be shown some charms, looking only at those which were set with jewels, and finally found one that was set with diamonds tha pleased lnui. However, the Btrauger said that his wife was in tho hotel, and before buying ne would like to submit the charm to her judgment, and if she was pleased the purchase would be consummated and would Mr. Lewis permit him to step into the hotel for a few moments ith the piece of lewelrv? Of course Mr. Lewis gave the permis sion, and after waiting for some little time, and the prospective purchaser did not return, Mr.

Lewis decided it might be well to lookup his buver and the charm. The result of the search was to locate the latter ut Down's loan office where it had been pawned for 50 Farther search showed the fact that the man had left town very soou after lie was at tho store. He seemed to have planned carefully, and was able to es cape. Keep up hope. There are thousands of cases where re covery from Consumption has been complete.

Work Which I. Entirely Batlaraotory-The Detailed Keport of tha Condition of It. Affairs. The Santa Fe Building and Loan association held its seventh annual meeting lust night, and the reports which were submitted show that this home institution is in a most flourishing condition, and it is continuing its work of assisting people to got homes, who otherwise would probably not own a place of their own. The meeting was well attended by stockholders, and the election of directors resulted in tho choice of the follow ing: C.

F. Johnson Jr. The reports indicate that the associa tion has stood what has been a hard year in other institutions, remarkably well, and the showing of a profit of 6 per cent on paid up stock is one which ought to attract other investors during the year. -Loans paid 11 per cent interest during the year, this being a profit of 11 per cent on preferred stock. But it is not only as an investment that the Building and Loan association has something to otter; it is to those who desire to secure homes for themselves, and are unable to do so, because of the large amount which must be made as a payment.

This institution oilers a way by which, if one owns the lot, he can build, and pay for it during a long period, at a rate of interest which Even during this yezr, when there have been withdrawals oy persons who were compelled to use money in other wave, there have been three houses built by the association. All in all. the report is a flattering one, and every individual who can spare So per month, or any sum greater than that, can find no place where it can be invested and bring such returns. The Santa Fe Building and Loan association deserves all the success which is coming to it, because it is managed by home people, and because, in addition to being a good investment, it is devoted to building up the city materially and directly.
