United Church Missionary Secretary Resigns Post 22 EDMONTON JOURNAL, Sept. 18, 1965 Maty if i '-p Ii 111 lilll r-1 1 4wJt Rev. Sterling Kitchen, secretary of the missionary nd maintenance department, United Church of Canada, Toroiito, has resigned after 10 years with the department. During those years the Church's missionary budget more than doubled, from just under $4 million to over 9 million and, with the United Church Women, to $11 million. Mr.

Kitchen was also chain-man of the stewardship com mittee of the Canadian Council of Churches, Toronto, and a member of the five man administrative committee of the ive work among the different protestant denominations in Canada. He was largely responsible for the Sector Plan Projects begun in 1933, which eventually involved 13 different denominations across Canada and covered every major city from Vancouver to St. John's, Newfoundland, as well' as many towns and much of the countryside. MADE HISTORY' The late Dr. W.

J. Gallagher, former secretary of the Canadian Council of Churches, said the Sector Plan was the greatest single thing, really involving different denominations in Canada on the local level, sponsored by the Canadian Council of Churches. As a cooperative stewardship venture it was "unique throughout the whole world, he said. Mr. Kitchen served mission fields in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and held pastorates in Mindemoya, Man-itoulin Island and at Cobalt in Northern Ontario and at Chalmers Church, Woodstock, Ont.

The missionary and maintenance department is responsible for raising the budget of the world-wide ministries of The United Church of Canada, which includes work in Angola, Northern Rhodesia, India, Nepal, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Trinidad and Brazil, as well as in Canada. It also supports relief work in Asia, Africa, South America; in such places as Algeria, the Congo, Hong Kong, Burma, Korea and Brazil. us a rH. h. er jbl a r.
