DROP TO THIRD Cincinnati Reds dropped into third place, l1 back, after a 7-0 loss to Pittsburgh Pirates DON DRYSDALE Three Paige CHICAGO (AP) Ageless pitcher Satchel Paige was signed Friday for the remainder of the season by American League Kansas City Athletics, club president Charles Finley announced. "Old Satch has a lot of stuff left, and we'll be interested in signing him for 1966," said Finley.

"He's been barnstorming. I don't have any idea how old he is, but he still can pitch we'll have a big day for him in Kansas City on Sept 23 when we play Boston. "It will be known as 'Salute to Satchel Paige'." Paige played with Cleveland in 1948. His late-season signing was regarded as a stunt, but Paige posted a 6-1 record, primarily in relief and worked two-thirds of an in-n'ng in the World Series New York Giants. Paige, already a legend, had a 4-7 record with the Indians in 1949, and was out of organized baseball in 1950, playing with Negro leagues and barnstorming.

CCMES BACK He came back for three seasons with St. Louis Browns for 1951-53, compiling an 18-23 record in three years. He was 12-10 in 1952. The Orioles released him In 1934 when the St. Louis fran-c'r're was moved to Baltimore.

ITs compiled records of 11-4, 11-8 and 10-2 with Miami in the Internationa! League In the years 1956-58. Another barnstorming career followed. Paige was at least in his 50s when he was with Miami. His exact age is impossible to drtemvas. The Orioles, however, had hr, birth date listed as 1904.

It is estimated that he has pitched more than 3,000 games. THE LTEST ATHLETIC Satchel Paige and Kansas City Farm Director Hank Peten again with a key hit in the fifth when the Dodgers broke the 2-2 tie. FIRST IS HOMER Rookie Don Young gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning with a homer, his first major league hit. But the Giants struck back in the sixth after loading the bases against Dick Ellsworth on a single by Tito Fuentes and walks to Jesus Alou and Mays, the last intentionally. Ted Abernathy replaced Ellsworth (13-14), yielded a run on Jim Hart's infield single and then was tagged for the clincher by McCovey.

The homer wss McCovey's 34th. SCATTERED HITS Bob Veale, the Pirates'" ace left-hander, brought his record to 16-10 by scattering nine Cincinnati hits. Felipe Alou got the job done for the Braves with a two-run homer in the seventh inning that snapped a 1-1 tie and made the Mets' Jack Fisher the first 20-game loser in the majors this season. The Phillies won it in the 12th after Pat Corrales stroked a two-out double. John Herrnsteii went in as a pinch runner, proceeded to third on a wild pitca by Hal Woodeshick and scored on Cookie Rojas' single up the middle.

Previously scheduled for last night, the jamboree was set ahead for Monday.

The city-wide high school awards night was held last night and it was felt that the football games would suffer from the lack of support, if the two were held the same night. The Metro Baseball League 's given first chance to use Renfrew Park on Monday night in the event their Sunday game is cancelled due to the weather. The Metro-League finalists also feel they shouldn't have to play on a field that has been torn up as a result of a night of high school football. "Whatever the said Mr. McLean, "the jamboree is defimtely going on Monday." If Renfrew cannot be used to suit the needs of the jamboree.

the entire affair will be switched to Coronation Park with starting time at 4:30 p.m. Normally the tournament would be divided between the two parks with teams from the eastern part of the city com peting against the western sec tion. The addition of Austin O'Brien will raise the league to 11 teams, the largest ever. The jamboree will serve to prepare teams for official lea gue openers 5ept. 17.

By The Associated Press If there is one pitcher Sandy Koufax can't match, it's teammate Don Drysdale in home runs, that is. Drysdale followed Koufax' record-breaking fourth noJiitter with a record-tying feat of his own Friday night, hitting his seventh homer of the season in Los Angeles Dodgers' 5-2 victory over Houston Astros. Drysdale gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead in the third inning when he homered on a Robin Roberts' pitch, tying the National League record for most homers by a pitcher in one season. Drysdale, who hit seven homers in 1958 and shares the record with the Dodgers' Don New-combe, also closed in on a 20-victory season by gaining his 19th triumph. That leaves him only three victories behind Koufax.

But then he's seven homers ahead. SCORES 100 AGAIN Meanwhile, San Francisco's Willie Mays became the first player in NL history to score 100 runs for 12 consecutive seasons when he came home in the sixth inning of the league-lead- chasinq the twpIhts American League 0 54 ti ei Pet. GENTLEMEN'S APPAREL FORMAL RENTALS tmpirt BuHdmi toil ini 0 ORDER GARAGES YOUR and By The Associated Press Lou Clinton, playing with his third American League team in five days, started with Cleve land Friday and helped the Indians drop a 2-0 decision.

That gave the outfielder the distinction of having the only three-team, four -game losing streak in the majors. His fifth- inning miscue enabled him to extend the streak. Clinton arrived in the Indians' camp from Los Angeles Angels in an unusual manner by way of Kansas City. The Angels had placed the 27- year-old Oklahoman on waiv ers. Kansas City claimed him, and he arrived there in time for Wednesday night's game against the Angels.

He started in right field but left after three innings, making room for Bert Campaneris, who was in the process of playing all nine positions. While he was in the game, though, Clinton didn't have a chance to catch, or miss, any fly balls. WHAT A MIXUP! Then, before he could get into the Athletics lineup again, it was discovered he never should have gone to Kansas City at all but instead should have gone directly to the Indians. AL President Joe cronm ruled the Athletics claimed Clinton after the 72-hour deadline had passed. In reality, Cronin said, he belonged to Cleveland.

No sooner had he arrived in Cleveland than he was inserted into the starting lineup in left field. In the fourth inning, with one on and one out, Detroit Tigers' Norm Cash lofted a fly to short left. Clinton came in, grabbed the ball but then dropped it. The Tigers didn't score, but Clinton gave them another chance in the fifth. LOST THE BALL With Bill Freehan at lirst and one out, Ray Oykr hit a fly to left.

Clinton lost the ball somehow, and the Tigers had runners at second and third. Micky Lolich struck out for what would have been the final out, but rookie Mickey Stanley followed with a single that drove in the runs.
