After coming up to Canada from California a year ago last spring, he was widely touted as the most eligible to capture the harness handicap crown. But he never got the chance to prove it because he was turned out to pasture after a sensational campaign at Ladner. Instead, it was Star Chief who took down the Alberta laurels. But Saturday it was something else again.

After failing to distinguish himself in the mud on the 27th, Shafter Spud just toyed with his field. Buster Marks took him to the front from the outside post on the first turn, and then for Marks, it was just a case of being certain he stayed aboard his cart. Star Cheif looked to have a shot at him, but heading to the half mile, he broke stride, and by the time Lome Clark got him back into gait, he had lost all chance. Shafter, a 6-5 choice of the public, sped the mile in 2:10. fastest of the meeting to date and on hand to join his star in the winner's circle was his owner, Jay Putkamer of the Paradise Valley Ranch at Squamish, B.C.
