Haute x.iviei '111 i 123 X.IMCI (Li NEW YORK (UPI) Lydell Mitchell and Franco Harris, college running mates at Penn State, joined O.J. Simpson in the 1,000 yard rushing circle this week giving the American Football Conference the only three runners with four figure statistics in pro football. Chuck Foreman leads the NFC with 961 yards. Mitchell, who gained 119 yards last week against the New York Giants, became the first runner in Baltimore history to gain 1,000 in a single season and now leads Harris by six yards, 1,008 to 1,002. The two remain far back of leader Simpson, who has rushed for 1,575 yards on an average of 5.3 per carry.

Simpson also leads the AFC scoring race with 20 touchdowns for 120 points and is just two TD's shy of tying the all-time single season scoring mark set by Gale Sayers of the Chicago Bears in 1965. Mitchell continues to lead the conference in receptions with 53 while Terry Bradshaw has taken over the passing lead with a 58 9 per cent completion rate and 17 scoring passes. In other departments, Oakland's Ray Guy remains comfortably in front in punting with a 44 5 average; Billy Johnson of Houston is tops in punt returns with a 17 yards Lefear leads in kickoff returns with a 31.7 yard average; and Pittsburgh's Mel Blount leads the conference in interceptions with 11 Sli rling" l-ielhiim UCuii (ifc SI ITUIII 71 IVi SUite 71 Corinellsville Junior High East's basketball team will open its 16-game schedule with a Saturday game at Latrobe. Muncie Earns Wiseman Award SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) University of California running back Chuck Muncie won the Wiseman Award Wednesday, the first player from a Northern California school to receive the honor. The award carries a $1,000 scholarship for the university and a 51,000 donation to Muncie's favorite charity.

The award is presented by the owners of Victoria Station restaurants to the athlete they feel has the best potential to play pro football. Muncie, runner-up candidate for the Heisman Trophy, is from Uniontown, Pa. Where Would He Hove Played In Buc Lineup? HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (UPI) The rumored trade between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Kansas City Royals apparently is off because of a decision by utility infielder Cookie Rojas. The Pirates reportedly offered centerfielder Al Oliver to Kansas City for centerfielder Amos Otis and Rojas, but Rojas balked.

Under a 1973 baseball rule, any player with 10 years in the major leagues and the last five with the same club must give his consent to any trade Rojas, who makes his home in Miami, declined to talk about the matter. "I can't really say anything about any trade," he said. "I just came here to see some people." Work spread that the deal was off a short time after Rojas visited the hotel where Pirate General Manager Joe L. Brown was staying. A Kansas City official said the proposed trade was not dead but "it's dying." Brown said he planned to meet again with the New York Yankees.

He did not mention any names but it is known that the Yankees are seeking to acquire second baseman Willie Randolph in return for reliever Sparky Lyle. But the Pirates are asking for Doc Medich, a former Pitt star. Time, Dukes Swat Spiders PITTSBURGH (UPI) The final score showed that Duquesne beat Richmond 60-58 Wednesday night but a Richmond player thought the game ended in a tie. Norm Nixon was awarded two free throws with one second remaining on the clock and he made both. But Jeff Butler, charged with fouling Nixon, said he did not foul Nixon and the buzzer had sounded.

There was confusion because the regular clock hanging over the floor was out of order and the hockey penalty clock was being used to keep time. With the score tied at 58-58 and six seconds remaining, Duquesne took the ball out of bounds and fired it to Nixon deep in the corner. He launched a 25-foot shot and Butler lunged at him. The ball fell short and Jesse Hubbard attempted to tip it in. When order was restored an official signaled that Nixon had been fouled and would be given two shots.

One second showed on the hockey penalty clock. "It's much nicer to have two shots," said Nixon, who led the Dukes with 20 points. "But it wouldn't have made any difference I knew I wasn't going to miss two." Butler denied he fouled Nixon and said he thought time had run out when Nixon shot. "It was close," he said. "The official made the call after the buzzer." Richmond held a 29-28 lead at the half, and boosted it to nine points before the Dukes rallied.

Nixon tied the game at 58-58 with 1:30 remaining on a free throw after stealing the ball. Richmond attempted a shot with 10 seconds remaining but Rich Cotten blocked it. The Dukes obtained possession and called timeout. The long pass to Nixon followed. "We were doing things out there I've never seen us do," said a bewildered Duquesne Coach John Cimcola.

"It's in the right side of the column. At the end of the year, you don't ask how you played, just how many you won." The victory was the third in four games for the Dukes, who show a 4-0 mark in the all-time series with the Spiders. Richmond is 2-3. John Brown led Richmond with 14 points. Uniontown finished the season with a 9-1 record, and runner-up for the Westerr Conference title, losing only to co-WPIAL champion Upper St. Clair. Halfback Reggie McLee carried over 54 points on nine touchdowns, including a single game high of four against Keystone Oaks, to lead Uniontown scoring.

Hall, a strong running fullback, as well as a linebacker, scored 37 points and could serve the all-county team as its placekicker. He scored four touchdowns, and kicked 13 points after TD, with a game high of five in the finale against Laurel Highlands. Billy McLee joins his brother at running back, scoring six touchdowns (and 6 PAT), giving the lineup its highest scoring family combination ever chosen for county honors in one season.
