Velentzas is being tried on racketeering and murder charges. Testifying from his wheelchair in Brooklyn Federal Court, Chiodo said Velentzas approached him outside the Walnut Bar in Brooklyn in the fall of 1988 about killing Sorecho (Sammy the Arab) Nalo, because Nalo was "interfering in his day-to-day gambling operations" and "was causing a lot of trouble to Spiro." Nalo was a former business associate of Velentzas' who had gone to prison, and upon his release began demanding a piece of Velentzas' gambling empire.

Velentzas told Chiodo he was "afraid" of Nalo, "and that he wanted to strike first and have him killed," said Chiodo, the 400-pound mobster who is recovering from a botched gangland hit. Chiodo testified Velentzas told him to go to reputed Luchese crime boss Vittorio Amuso and ask for help to kill Nalo. Amuso, whose murder and racketeering trial will soon begin in the same courthouse, gave his permission to Chiodo, but insisted that Velentzas participate in the hit on Nalo, Chiodo said.
