1 1 1 -DAILY NEWS 5 11 I I 1 1 Monday, June' 22, 1992 EraflDiiDS ids. By JACK LEAHY Riders want Woodhaven entrance open Daily News Staff Writer Subway riders are holding a protest rally on Wednesday to demand the reopening of the eastern entrance to the busy Wood haven Blvd.Slattery Plaza station of the Queens Blvd. line in ElmhursL The entrance on the north side of Queens Blvd. near an underpass of the Long Island Expressway was closed in April 1991 at the request of the transit police. The station serves the and local trains.

The rally is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the closed entrance. Louis Walker, co-chairman of the Neighborhood Stabilization Committee of Community Board 4, said the action has inconvenienced and endangered people. Area residents also can use the 63d Drive station a few blocks away. Walker conceded, but he said most prefer Woodhaven Blvd.

Board 4 District Manager Rose Rothschild said the closed access also was used by people seeking to get to the south side of Queens Blvd. by walking through a subway passageway. "That's a very dangerous street to cross for the elderly or for anybody," said Rothschild of the 10-lane thoroughfare. Transit police LL Robert Valentino said the access was one of 16 throughout the subway system that were closed at the same time for security "In 1990, there were 29 felonies at the Woodhaven Blvd. station," Valentino said.

"So far this year, there have been eight" 1 The entrance had a "very low volume of traffic" from passengers and is 270 feet away from the token clerk's booth, Valentino noted. When the station was opened in the 1930s, he said, it was not designed for the security needed in the 1990s. Edna Baskin, the co-chairman of the stabilization committee, said petitions have been gathered with the signatures of 900 people who want the entrance reopened. She said the committee has relayed their pleas to Transit Authority officials without anv success. He pointed out that the station serves the Queens Center shopping mall as well as residents of nearby Lefrak City, Sherwood Village and other apartment complexes north of Queens Blvd.

The only remaining access to the station on that side of the boulevard is a block away, at 59th Ave. "Mobs of people have to squeeze up and down those stairs (at 59th Ave.) in the morning and evening," Walker said. "If there were a fire or some other emergency, there would be chaos." i a DAILYiNEWS Invites you to celebrate America's largest two-day event Now con oflord the mirode ol BETTER HEARING with Hie amazing "In The Ear" Hearing Aid mm mm im Vij-j-i. kl -w, A -j Hearing Aid tint I I AMAZING I MlUClf FORI HEARING I HELP I fiKLYl "fcSDJ Ofhr FREE ADMISSION FREE PARKING (At shea stadium) Sponsored by: Claire Shulman, Queens Borough President Queens Festival '92 Committee New York City Department of Parks and Recreation Now, you too can take part in the country's biggest, most exciting festival.
