THE GETTYSBURG TIMES, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1989 3B Coaches select All-BML team Christy Orndorff Delone Catholic Ann Welty Delone Catholic Abby Hafer New Oxford The Blue Mountain League volleyball coaches have selected the 1989 All-League teams. Co-champion Delone Catholic High School and Wajnesboro led the selections with four and five girls, respectively, placed on first and second teams. Unanimous choices of the coaches for first team were New Oxford's Abby Hafer and Kim Heflm, Kim Heflin New Oxford Delone's Christy Orndorff and Waynesboro's Melissa Skasko and Kim Spottswood. Hafer, in her sophomore year, helped the Colonials to third-place league finish as an outside hitter. Heflin, a junior, also was an outside hitter.

Orndorffs specialty was also at outside hitter. Ten girls were chosen for first Warriors face tough foe in district playoffs Mechanicsburg (16-3-2) vs. Gettysburg (11-2-2) Where: Ephrata When: Saturday, 8 Overview: Mechanicsburg, one of five teams from the Mid-Penn Conference which made the 16-team Class AAA field, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 1 -0 victory over Central York Gettysburg, which made the field as an at-large entry, defeated Hempfield, 2-1, in the opening round for the school's first-ever victory in district competition Key players: The Wildcats, staked to an early lead on Jim Baker's goal, relied on their defense against Central York, and players like Les Robinson, Chris Lougee, Keith Smithson and Bill Charron came through. Brandon Ream went all the way in goal for Mechanicsburg, stopping eight shots The Warriors also got a big game out of their keeper in their win over Hempfield, as junior Ryan Raffensperger turned aside 15 shots The defense in front of Raffensperger, sprearheaded by Joe Altieri and Tim Krablm, eats a lot of shots There may be no deadlier a shot in districts than that of Don Campbell, Gettysburg's all time leading scorer RYAN RAFFENSPERGER Keys: For the Wildcats, it will be keeping Campbell covered at all times That however, will open up some opportunities for payers like Rick Hubbard and Josh Borock, and theywill need to look to score The Warriors will start as many as 10 seniors, so they undoubtedly have the edge in experience Quotes: "Scoring first is always nice, but it won't be as crucial as it was against Hempfield We've been behind before and battled back, and we'll be capable of doing it against Mechanicsburg if we have to Gettysburg head coach Mark Nesbitt Adams Rescue Mission Recycling Schedule Monthly Curb-tide and Drop point Collection Schedule CURBSIDE PICK-UPS EACH MONTH Kmi-ficld Ht Mondny Orrtjinnu 1 Ht Monduy lionnciiuvillc 1 Ht WcdttcAduy CunTitown 3i-d Thurndny McKnitfhtHtown 3rd Twin Wedncnday 2nd Monday Arcndtnvillc TuoHdiiy MummuHburK 3rd TueHduy York. 3rd Mondiiy Littluritown 2nd 2nd TUESDAY Lincoln Estates, Woodcrcst, Heir's Rdg.

First team Denise Spangler and Ann Welty joined Orndorff. Spangler, a junior, played middle hitter while Welty, a senior, was an outside and middle hitter for the Squirettes. Littlestown's Dana Shanebrook, Defense Jacqui Baseshore Bermudian Springs a junior, made the squad as an outside hitter. Bermudian Springs placed two players on the first team, both who are seniors.

Patti Myers earned her recognition through her efforts at the setter position. Jacqui Base- shore played the middle hitter position for the Eagles, which finished fourth in the league. (from page IB) bend at times on defense, but we never did break. We also were successful at creating some turnovers tonight." The first turnover set up the only score of the first half. Chad Wiestling of the Blue Devils was back deep to receive a punt by Littlestown's Dave Milliken midway through the opening period Milliken got off a high, booming kick, and Wiestling chose not to call for a fair catch.

That turned out to be the wrong choice, because just as he caught the ball he was stuck by Toby DeGroft of the Thunderbolts. The hit forced a fumble, which was recovered by Jamie Goulden, giving Littlestown a first down at the Greencastle 26-yard line. On the first play following the turnover, quarterback Yancy Unger scrambled for 15 yards and a first down at the 11. Two plays later from the 9, he passed to Jeff Stauffer for the touchdown. The Blue Devils answered with a 17-play, 80-yard drive.

Trouble is, they needed to go 83 yards for the score. On fourth-and-goal from the 3, quarterback Shawn Sites tried to hit Wiestling, who ran a slant pattern, but a hard hit by Milliken separated Wiestling and the ball right at the goal line. Greencastle made one other advance deep into enemy territory, driving down to the Littlestown 3-yard line late in the fourth quarter. But on a first-and-goal play, Mark Bunch of the Thunderbolts fell on a fumble by Tyler Hamilton and the shutout was preserved. "That's a ball-control football team," Shue said of Greencastle.

"But we couldn't let them do that against us. They did put together a couple of sustained drives, but then we seemed to come up with the big play on defense" One of those big plays to which Shue was referring was turned in Brian Ginter. The Blue Devils had started their first possession of the second half in Littlestown territory and had already racked up one first down when Ginter picked off a pitch from Sites on the option and took it back 62 yards for the score. Doug French provided two big plays on defense for the Thunderbolts, picking off a pair of Sites' passes in the second half. And in between his two thefts, the 6-2, 178-pound senior dashed 81 yards on a reverse for a touchdown late in the third period.

Littlestown's final touchdown was scored by defensive end Mark Weishaar. On the first play after a Milliken punt pinned the Blue Devils back at their 1-yard line, Sites turned to his right and pitched the ball, but all of his backs had gone left The ball came to rest in the end zone for Weishaar to fall on for the score Weishaar, a 5-9, 188-pound senior, made nine tackles in the game, including three for losses He also anchored the offensive line which allowed the Thunderbolts to rush for 195 yards against the Blue Devils. "We kind of needed a good test like this tonight," Shue said, referring to the fact that his club had defeated its two previous opponents by a combined score of 106-0. "We've got a couple of tough opponents coming up (in Gettysburg and Hanover), so we wanted to be involved in a tight one. Greencastle is a quality opponent and this was a very nice win for us."
