The Jazz had a chance until Magic hit a free throw which gave Los Angeles a 118-113 lead with 11 seconds left to play. The Lakers rushed out to a 68-56 halftime lead behind the scoring of Jamaal Wilkes, who had 12, and Jabbar. who had 15. But the Jazz came back in the third quarter to narrow the lead to 91-90 on the shooting of rookie Thurl Bailey, Darrell Griffith and Ricky Green. Then the Lakers, with Wilkes and Bob McAdoo hitting the baskets and leading the way, scored nine points to the Jazz's two to take a 100-93 lead with eight minutes left.

Johnson and Jabbar then took charge, firing the Lakers to a 115-107 advantage with 2:49 to play. The Jazz came back on the shooting of Jerry Eaves, Adrian Dantley and John Drew to cut the Lakers' lead to 115-113, but Wilkes, Johnson and Jabbar drove the nails into the Jazz coffin from there. Jabbar and Wilkes had 21 each to lead the Lakers, but Dantley led all scorers with 24. Other Lakers to score in double figures were Mike McGee with 19, Johnson with 17 and McAdoo with 14.
