MONDAY, JUNE 23,1975 THE DAILY CONNEUSVILIE, FA. IB-Hole Playoff Needed fo Settle (I.S. Open Title PAGE SEVEN Legion Goes 12 to Get Eight By PAT KILLEN MEDINAH.HL(UPI)-The diamond anniversary ILS. Open winds down to an 18-hole playoff today between Lou Graham, a handsome 11-year golf veteran who has won only two tournaments in an unremarkable career, and John Mahaffey, who in five years has never been in a playoff. Graham and Mahaffey, more survivors than victors in Sunday's final round, will tee off today for the Open title, with the winner to get $40,000 and attendant fame.

The loser gets $20,000. Graham, 37, from Nashville, set the tone for the match by turning to Mahaffey Sunday and saying, "I'm sure John will be ready. hope we both play well." It will be Graham's third playoff and he's 1-1, winning a sudden death playoff with three others at the LM Open in 1972 and losing the New Orleans Open in 1973 in a playoff with Jack Nicklaus. Mahaffey, a 27-year-old from Houston, said he "has a perfect playoff record--it's my first playoff." Although Mahaffey owns only one previous victory, the 1973 Sahara Invitational, his recorfl has been more impressive this year where he ranks ninth among the money winners with $101,665 compared with Graham's $46,011 for 28th place. But anything can happen in this Open, which saw Jack Nicklaus finish with three straight bogeys, young Ben Crenshaw ruin his chances by hitting a water ball on the 17th, Frank Beard blow a three stroke lead and come in with a 78 and Lee Trevino finish off with a duffer's triple bogey on the 18th hole.

Graham and Mahaffey finished in a tie for first at 287, three-over-par on the tough par- 71 Medinah No. 3 course. Graham, looking like the "good guy" in his white hat and shirt, was primed to win it all if he could just get it together and 'shoot a par-four on the 406 yard final hole. Playing it safe, he drove with a two iron and had a "sidehill" lie. 'On his second shot, he thought the ball would pull and when he "hit it solid," the pull didn't come.

"It landed on the bank 'and jumped into the bunker," he said. Graham still had a chance to get "up and down" in two for the title but then "I hit a bunker shot," he said, Iwhich left him "18 to 20 feet" from the pin. Mahaffey, who shot a 71 and had been in the club house for almost an hour, came out to the green to watch Graham's trial. He stood there, biting his lip, wondering if he still, had a chance to finish in a first place tie. Graham sighted his putt and then, "I executed it short," he said with some finality.

"I was "on line going up the hill and I left it short about 10 inches. I "couldn't take any real big charge." I The dapper pro said, "I was oiot satisfied, that's for sure. But I don't feel emotionally let down. Fll come back and try to win tomorrow." No one had a good explanation for Sunday's final round in only Bob Murphy with a "69 and last year's Open ALL WINTER Clothes Should Be DRY CLEANED Before Storing! Skirts 95 Pants 95 35 Dresses pw 70 Shirts 38 Hats SsL SAM SIMONS TAILOR Sehmifz Building 172 W. Crawford Dial 628-2050 champion Hale Inrin with a 70 broke par.

Their finishes tied them for second place at 288, four-over-par, with the hapless Crenshaw and Beard. "I've never been ia a U.S. Open that was easier than this one," said Irwio. "Everybody is throwing it I just dont understand." Nicklaus was no less shamed. Noted for his final day charges, the big bear was moving along pretty well, two-over-par, when he lost it all and took bogeys on the last three holes.

Nicklaus finished with a one- over-par 72 for the day and a 72- hole total of 289 to tie Britain's Peter Oosterhuis for fourth place. Arnold Palmer, the people's choice, played with Niddaus and the two drew the biggest crowd, but neither could put together the necessary charge. Palmer shot a 73 to finish at 290 and tied with Pat Fitzsimons, and Tom Watson, the two first round leaders, who both threw it away Sunday with final 77s. Henry's went ahead for the first time, 54 in the fourth. Ed Kurtz was aboard on a fielder's choice, Chuck Snyder singled, and Armstrong walked to load the bases. Richter cleaned them with a triple, and scored on a wild throw at home. Bud's regained the lead, 6-5, in the fifth, when Shearer walked and Momeyer homered. Cullen gained one of her biggest prizes since she dropped off the tour for the corrective operation and returned. Mrs. Cullen, who hasn't been high in the money this year, played a nervy head-to-head round with Kathy Ahem, who had led the first 36 holes but faltered with two double-bogeys on her final round. Betsy had two birdies and the rest pars in fashioning the two-under round. Miss Ahem carded a 78 ana STOCKING TROUT EVERY SATURDAY Stocking Catfish June 25 RAY'S FISHING LAKE finished five strokes from the head of of the pack at 216. Mrs.

Cullen said she was beginning to think about the 10th hole whether she could stand the pressure. "You almost wish you'd go ahead and bogey or someone else would birdie so you could get agressive again," she said. "I tried to hold on and not lose. I guess Kathy did too, bat failed." Miss Ahern walked directly from the threesome, which included eighth-place finisher Kathy McMullen, into the clubhouse without a word. Other women headed directly to the showers, too, to beat the heat which hit the 90-degree mark for the third straight day.

However, a refreshing breeze did kick up during the late afternoon and could have affected some of the ladies' games. Kathy Post, one of five players tied for third, had the day's low score at 68 for the three-round total 213. Also tied for third were JoAnne Carner, Sandra Palmer, Kathy Postlewait and Debbie Austin. The quintet split $10,750. They call him Turkey, but be looked like an Eagle in the 12th inning.

Jim Spargur singled home two runs in the top of the 12th inning to break up a tie game and give ConnellsviUe's American Legion Baseball team a 4-2 win at Fayette City in a match of divisional leaders played on what had to be the hottest day of the year. Maybe it just seemed like the hottest day, but for the sake of comparison let's say that if one direction of an eternal trip is any hotter, there must have been some vows to change ways of living while heading home after the game. This was the eighth win in a row for the Herman Welsh- Buzz Barnhart coached Legionairres, who started second round play with this game, the win giving them a tighter hold on first place in the Northern Division. The win also gave Connellsville a sweep of the season's series with Jim Russell's Fayette City charges, who dropped to a 4-3 record, and out of first place in the Southern Division. For while Fayette City was losing, Uniontown was beating Masontown, 6-1, and taking over the lead with a 5-2 record.

Larry Green started for Connellsville and pitched a no- hitter through seven innings. Mark Lario broke up the no-hit bid with an opposite field double to lead off the eighth inning. Righthanded hitting Lario lined one to right that Mike Tremba almost got to, running hard to his left, but the ball was off his fingertips. Dick Irwin came on to pitch in the ninth, and was the beneficiary of Spargur's hit. Tom Vitale started for Fayette City, and went eight innings, working a two-hitter and leaving on the short end of a 1-0 count.

He struck out 11. Sokol took over, and was the loser when Connellsville came through in the 12th. Connellsville struck with two out in the 12th. Mark Ward led off and flied to left. Tremba walked, and was cut down trying to steal second.

Then Irwin walked, and Dave McLuckey chopped one toward third that George Lyons tried to short hop but couldn't hold on to the ball. Irwin was into second and McLuckey legged it out to first. With Spargur at bat, Sokol uncorked a wild pitch, over the reach of catcher Ron Davis, and both runners advanced. Spargur then lined one over second, sending both runners across. Fayette City tried to get something going in the home 12th.

Bob Stergis singled to lead off, Greg Pastors making a diving stop of the ball in the hole at short, but unable to make a play. Lyons struck out, then Jeff Whiteko, a righthanded hitter, lined one toward first that looked like it might be along the iine. But only for an instant. Ward speared the liner, and stepped on first, doubling Stergis who was running, to end the game. Connellsville had only five hits off the two Fayette City hurlers, but one was Ward's triple that led to the first Connellsville run, and another was Tremba's second Legion homer in as many games, to provide a temporary 2-1 lead in the 10th.

Fayette City's four hits off Green and Irwin included doubles by Lario and Lyons. Green and Vitale had quite a pitchers battle going through eight innings, and both must have sweat a ton before they left the premises. Vitale gave up one run and two hits, walked three, and. got 11 on strikes before leaving. Green hurled double zeroes through seven, walked three, and fanned seven before leaving.

Both had strings of 10 consecutive outs. Vitale retired 10 batters in a row from the start Bucky Bolyard knows his way around the softball field just like he did as a basketball player at West Virginia University. The ex-California High cage coach slammed four consecutive homeruns as Roscoe's beat Denvers in Mon Valley Softball League play. Teammate Don Debreczeni had three homers. of the game until walking Spargur with one down in the fourth. He closed with seven in a row before giving way to Sokol. Green got four in a row at the start, walked Stergis with one down in the second, then retired 10 in a row until walking Whiteko with two out in the fifth. Then he got seven more in a string until Lario's leadoff, no- hit ending double in the eighth. The two Fayette City runners that walked also stole second, before 1-ario's double, and all three runners stayed at second-the doses! Jhe home team came to scoring until the ninth.

Connellsville made one threat in the fourth. With one out, Spargur walked and George Gabriel chopped one toward third with the throw to second too late for the force try, and both were aboard. But Vitale got Pastors on a fly to center and Rick Broadwater on strikes to end that threat. Connellsville broke through with a run in the fifth. With one down.

Ward lined one into the left-center gap and pulled up at third. With two out, and Green batting, the squeeze was flashed. Ward broke for home, and Green tapped one just out of reach of both Vitale and Lou Pollacci, converging on the ball, and Ward was home, with Green at first. That run looked mighty big, as Green continued to mow down home batters. Fayette City made its tying move in the last of the ninth.

Don Cain drew a leadoff walk, and was bunted ahead by Gary Tuomi. That was all for Green, and Broadwater came on in relief, with Irwin going to second. Quinto chopped one to third, but the throw was high at first, and Cain was in with the tying run, and Quinto' went to second. Irwin then took over on the mound, with Broadwater going back to second. Mickey Susick hit to short and Pastors' throw was to Steve Kooser at third for the tag on Quinto.

With Stergis at bat, Susick broke for second, and was cut down, Spargur to Broadwater. Connellsville went ahead 2-1 in the top of the 10th. Tremba led off and slammed one over Cain's head in left, circling the bases as the relay back took a bad hop away from the cutoff man. Fayette City came right back with the equalizer in the home 10th, and in the process ran themselves out of a possible chance to win. Stergis led off with a walk, and went to third as Lyons doubled to right-center.

But as Stergis got to third, there was Lyons right behind him, and he ended up being caught in a rundown, Stergis holding third. Whiteko hit to Ward at first, Stergis still holding, with two out. Davis worked the count to 3-2, and walked, with ball four being down and off home plate, bouncing to the backstop. Stergis was in with the tying run. Play continued through the Turkish Bath, with both sides making mild threats in the llth.

Pastors was safe on an error in the llth, with one down, but stayed on first. Quinto singled with two down in the Fayette City llth. Then Spargur settled the issue in the top of the 12th, and Ward drove in the final nail with his unassisted double dip in the home end of the inning.
